Asian Cricket Council Trophy, Jul 2002

The fourth ACC Trophy competition takes place in Singapore for the first time. Three different venues play host to ten Asian nations, from July 10-21.

The UAE and Hong Kong qualified for the next Asia Cup, after reaching the final of the previous ACC Trophy tournament held in Sharjah in 2000. This tournament was to be held in 2001 but has been delayed indefinitely due to the refusal of the Indian government to allow its national cricket team to compete in the same tournament as Pakistan.

Teams in this tournament again have the added incentive to perform well as the top two sides will qualify for the subsequent Asia Cup competition, earmarked for 2005, and earn $100,000 US as their appearance fee.

This tournament sees the international debuts of Oman and Qatar, and the return of Thailand, who missed the 2000 competition.

The teams have been seeded in two round-robin groups of five. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.

Group A: Kuwait, Nepal, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates
Group B: Hong Kong, Malaysia, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand

Singapore rewrite record books at ACC Trophy

SINGAPORE: Singapore amassed a one-day cricket record on Tuesday with a rollicking 440 for 2 off 50 overs as they trounced Thailand in the ACC Trophy by 325 runs. Man of the match Kapila Mendis blazed his way to 191 off 139 balls, including 15 fours and nine sixes, while captain Zubin Shroff chimed in with a merry 159 from 127 balls with 16 fours and five sixes. Thailand were then bundled out for 115.

The previous-best recognised one-day score was 398 for 5 by Sri Lanka against Kenya in 1995-96, but Singapore’s whirlwind onslaught counted for nought with the side no longer in a position to make the semifinals from Group B. The two berths have already been secured by unbeaten Malaysia and Hong Kong.
