USA to stage Asia v Rest of the World
Deb K Das
April 20, 2005
It is being claimed that a three-match Asia v Rest of the World series will be played at Houston between June 16 and 19. The venue, the Houston Astrodome in Texas, is a home of baseball in the USA. The series, which consists of two 45-over games and a final 50-over match, was announced at a press conference in New Delhi by an organisation called Cricket World International (CWI).
In an open letter to the organisers, Ehsan Mani, the ICC’s president, was reported as stating that it was “the right time for the USA to become a major participant in international cricket.” He continued: “This region represents a virtually untapped source of future players, supporters and commercial partners. The ICC’s aim is for cricket to become one of the great and much-loved sports of the Americas in the years to come.”
CWI staged the World Double-wicket Championships at the Houston Astrodome three years ago, before that event was switched to the Caribbean. Subsequently CWI was eclipsed locally by Project USA and ProCricket, and seems to have turned its attention elsewhere.
At the press conference, CWI announced that Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Sami, and Shahid Afridi were already committed to play for the Asia XI in Houston. Former Pakistan vice-captain Yousuf Youhana, incumbent Younis Khan, former captain Rashid Latif, and Shoaib Malik are also set to play. "Talks are on with Sachin Tendulkar, Inzamam-ul Haq, and Shoaib Akhtar also," Hasan Jalil, representing CWI, told reporters.
The World XI will include the West Indian duo of Ricardo Powell and Wavell Hinds, Mahela Jayawardane and Chaminda Vaas from Sri Lanka, New Zealanders Nathan Astle and Chris Harris, retired South African Jonty Rhodes and his compatriot Jacques Kallis, as well as Michael Bevan (Australia), Heath Streak (Zimbabwe), John Davison (Canada) and Steve Massiah (USA).
In the presence of Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad, Pakistan’s information and broadcasting minister, who nodded in confirmation, Jalil said, "We have obtained no objection certificates from the cricket boards of India and Pakistan.” But Cricinfo contacted the Indian board who told us that it knew nothing about the proposed venture.
And the names on the list of those the organisers claim will be playing also raises questions over how credible this venture might be as Streak and Harbhajan are committed to playing county cricket. There is also the fact that the MCC's Tsunami match against a Rest of the World side at Lord's is scheduled for June 14.

I thought that Sri Lanka was in Asia. They should change team’s name from Asia XI to Indo-Pak XI.

** Top Pakistan, India cricketers to feature in Houston ODIs**
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Cricket World International (CWC) has signed on top players from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and other Test playing nations for a series of three one-day matches scheduled in Houston, United States in June.
A senior official of the CWC, Hasan Jalil confirmed on Wednesday that Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Sami and Rashid Latif had been signed on from Pakistan while from India Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni andIrfan Pathan had agreed to play for the Asian Eleven against the World Eleven in the three matches.
The matches would be held at the Astrodome in Houston on June 16, 18 and 19. Hasan, who is also a well known Urdu commentator, said the series was part of efforts to promote the game in the United States and a follow up to two double-wicket competitions held in New York and Houston since 2000.
“We got good response for those two tournaments and we are hoping that with a proper one-day series in which the world’s top players are involved this event would be a bigger draw and sellout,” he added.
Incidentally, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has also resumed its efforts to develop and promote the game in the USA and the three games are said to have its support and blessings.
Sri Lankan players Mahela Jayawardena and Dilhara Fernando will also play for the Asian Eleven. For the World Eleven the CWI have negotiated with Ricardo Powell, Wavell Hinds and Dawyne Bravo (West Indies), Chris Harris, Hamish Marshal (New Zealand), Heath Streak (Zimbabwe), Mark Boucher and Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa), Andy Bichel (Australia), Nasser Hussain (England) and John Davison (Canada).
CWI in conjunction with the United States Cricket Association is also planning to host a grand cricket awards ceremony/dinner/ musical night during the series in which legendary figures like Sachin Tendulkar, Sir Vivian Richards, Courtney Walsh, Javed Miandad, Brian Lara, Aravinda de Silva, etc are likely to be given awards.

Thanks for the update. On their website, the Indo-Pak team seems to have only Shoaib Akhter as the lone fast fast bowler. So not sure if they are able to get Sami and Pathan as well. Though the website seems fairly amateurish and quite possible, its out of date.

this is hilarious, it said on the poster for the Shezad Roy thing that the players are subject to visa in small print. i was joking with my friend who went yesterday before he went that none of them would get visas, and he didnt believe me.
Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis still came to the Zindagi Trust program yesterday in Dallas, my friend got his ball signed by Wasim and also got a pic. friend got to go free because he is a part of the Dallas Cricket League.
it says matches r postponed till August, but they’re is also a slight chance that the matches will be canceled all together due to the tight international cricket calendars.

Pakistan participants, including Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq, were waiting to have them issued.

It seems like Inzi and Afridi's beards are creating few problems.

It would’ve been easier to get visas from Islamabad.
