Beats Australia and New Zealand by ten votes to three

Asia have won the bid to host the 2011 World Cup by beating a joint bid by Australia and New Zealand by ten votes to three. The International Cricket Council’s executive committee met in Dubai on Sunday, and Asia were represented by Inderjit Singh Bindra, the former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While the news did the rounds and reactions poured in an official announcement from the ICC was awaited.
“It will bring joy to millions and millions of Asians,” Raj Singh Dungarpur, former BCCI president said soon after the news was announced. “Ehsan Mani made the annoucement in the meeting. It has been also decided that Australia will get to host the World Cup in 2015 and the next edition will go to England unopposed. The whole decision process was cordial and that’s how the noble game of cricket should be played on and off the field.”
The result is a boost for the Asian group whose bid had been weakened by a late submission. Only recently Ehsan Mani, the ICC president, had said, “Their [Asia’s] strong case only weakened because of late submission of compliance book. Nevertheless, if Asia doesn’t win the right for 2011 World Cup, I am sure they would get the 2015 World Cup.”
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had made a bid and were allowed an extension until April 21 to set out their proposal after they had difficulty hitting the first deadline in March. They were up against a joint Australia-New Zealand bid for the tournament.
“We put in place some very strict compliance guidelines so a lot of work has gone into both of these submissions,” Malcolm Speed had told AFP a few days ago. “Both have government support and have indicated their ability to comply with strict ICC criteria regarding the number of venues, the quality of facilities and the exemption from tax.”
Top notch facilities and experience at hosting big events were in Australia and New Zealand’s favour. Australia and New Zealand jointly organised the World Cup in 1992 and feel they have the right by rotation to host the tournament in 2011. James Sutherland, chief executive of Cricket Australia, spoke of the factors that could help them clinch it. “In very recent history Australia has hosted the Olympics, hosted the Rugby World Cup and with the Commonwealth Games there’s a proven track record of performance that stands us in good stead,” he said. “The facilities, the track record of putting on these large sporting events, and also the resources that we have, the human resources we have in our country and New Zealand, are really strong factors in our favour.”
Meanwhile the Asian group had all along believed they had a strong case. They claimed that Asia deserved to host every third edition of the World Cup. “Our claim is a rightful one,” said Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Indian board. “The South Asian region has four of the ten Test-playing nations and a large part of the money earned from cricket comes from here, so there is good reason that every third World Cup be held here. Our proposal is not about India alone. To see matches being held in more countries would mean more crowd participation.”
In the end, when it came down to voting, the Asian group came through with a big majority.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

What the f**K. I would have prefered it in Aus and NZL. Great ground, awsome coverage and great match timing if you live in USA. Well May be I will be back in India by 2011 probably. :D

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

I am with F&B. ODI's on subcontinental pitches are a drag.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

10 to 3? They couldn't even muster all the gora votes? Thats a dud.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

although we still have some time on hand to decide about the semis and final, but if current reports are true (semis in India and Final in pak) , then Karachi should host the final as last time it was lahore infact in 1987 it was also Lahore for semi.

If india is getting final and Pakistani 2 semis then one should hend in Khi and one in Lahore...!

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

I thought they were making a brand new stadium in Islamabad???

Also, how in the world do they expect to be better than the FIFA World Cup? Have you seen some of our crappy stadiums in the sub continent? Some of them are being held by bamboo sticks, and concrete as seating arrangements.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

Agree - or in England. Look at the state of some of the grounds e.g. Peshawar, dull and look at the state of the outfield. They will have to do a lot of improvement on such grounds.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

Definitely. I think Karachi should host one of the two major-league semi-final matches (or the final for that matter). The crowd always comes out in great big numbers, and the atmosphere is constantly vibrating and lively.

Arey mian shaamianon ki baat kar rahey hain aap? Khul kar kahiyey naa zara.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

  • Pakistan would use four venues in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Peshawar.

The News

Surprised to see Multan being omitted from the list. If anything, they should have left out at least Rawalpindi in favor of the newly built Multan Cricket Stadium.

Furthermore, is there an update as to how long the stadium being built in the port city of Gwadar will approximately take?

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

  • "There were reports in the Pakistani press that lucrative financial rewards were promised to the West Indies in return for their vote. Seemingly, these have been confirmed by comments from I S Bindra, former president of the BCCI, who told reporters in Abu Dhabi, “We have a commitment with the West Indies Board to raise funds to help in next year’s World Cup by playing a three-match series in North America. They played a key role in our bid to win the 2011 World Cup and to help them is an obligation.”

CricInfo

Instead of having to have a dozen abysmal reasons to schedule off-shore matches in the first place, there is now a valid and known concern for the matches to be played between these two countries? To help raise funds for WICB in next year’s World Cup, who, in turn, secured the deal for Asia?

Good God.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

I am also surprised that Multan has been omitted from the list. Its one of the few decent grounds in the country. Maybe its a political decision to name Peshawar as one of the venues or it could be the fact that there are not many good quality hotels in the city. God knows what the main reason is. If Peshwar is confirmed as one of the venues then like I said before - they will have to renovate the stadium considerably. Honestly it looks so horrible - compare it to the likes of Multan stadium.

Also - I have read the same report regarding the new stadium in Gwadar. Even if its ready - it has not been mentioned as one of the potential venues. Are you aware of any details regarding the stadium in Gwadar i.e. capacity, facilities, architecture etc.

Also we don’t know the details of the matches to be played in each country as yet - i.e. the semi finals and the final. I think Pakistan may get the 2 semi finals but then again the other countries may also want at least a semi final in their country. The final I think will be in India - because bigger grounds - better infrastucture put in place especially after the Commonwealth games had taken place.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

This is exactly what I mean.........smaller venues in India definetly use bamboo sticks and a major ground such as Faislabad also use it as well. I don't think there will be too many matches in such stadiums. I think majority of the matches schedules to be played in India will be in their major grounds. Some of the new grounds in India i.e. Mohali are impressive and they also have plans for indoor practice facilities.

This definetely will NOT be better than the FIFA World cup. For a start they will not be as many teams and I don't think the TV audience around the world compared to football will be as big.

Concrete is used in Peshwar, Rawalpindi and I am not sure where else. If you are holding a world cup match - do you expect the foreign supporters especially from non Asian countries to sit on these all day along? They are not used to such seating facilities and also doesn't create a very good impression. They will definetely have to look at this seriously and provide proper seating on such grounds.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

The very last of the news reported on the above project is mentioned in Dawn, and my assumption is that the negotiations and the on-going talks between the relevant authorities are still in process at this present time.

Fully agree on your Multan bit and your latest post above related to the seating arrangements, Rock_Express Bhai.

A quick search regarding the planning and development process that is currently underway for the stadium being built in Gwadar yielded in the following result (from a historical perspective):

No one can argue with the cricket board’s desire to give attention to the hitherto neglected areas of the southern parts of the country as in the recent years the Punjab province – barring a few games in Karachi – has been bestowed with the privilege to host the whole gamut of international cricket played in Pakistan. Thus the PCB’s plan to improve playing and lodging facilities at important cricket centres like Hyderabad and Quetta needs to be unequivocally lauded but along with these noble intentions, the idea to build an international cricket stadium in the still undeveloped port city of Gwadar defies logic as well as wisdom and certainly casts doubts on the sincerity of the board about spreading international cricket all over the country.

With the current population of Gwadar mostly comprising the locals, majority of whom even now live in the primeval age and definitely know little about the game, and the labourers busy in various projects, one wonders what purpose it will serve to build a stadium over there. Even if it’s a long-term plan, as claimed by the Chairman, one can count ten better centres where the PCB can focus its attention to develop as the future cricket venue than squandering energy and resources on Gwadar, which still needs 10-20 years before it can come anywhere at par with other developed cities of Pakistan.

Cricket World Pakistan

Furthermore, there is also another new project being taken to create a brand-new facility in Sahiwal. A blue-print model is attached:

After the above three projects are finalized and have achieved a completion, we will have a total of seventeen (17) cricket grounds in our country, listed below:

  1. Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar

  2. Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore

  3. Bahawal Stadium, Bahawalpur

  4. Defence Housing Authority Stadium, Karachi

  5. Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore

  6. Ibn-e-asim Bagh Stadium, Multan

  7. Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad

  8. Jinnah Stadium, Gujranwala

  9. Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot

  10. Multan Cricket Stadium

  11. National Stadium, Karachi

  12. Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad

  13. Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium

  14. Sheikhupura Stadium

Additions:

  1. Islamabad

  2. Sahiwal

  3. Gwadar

At least we know that half a dozen of these stadiums are in “working” condition (fit for International standards). Shouldn’t PCB go ahead and allocate part of the funds to redesign and recreate the rest of the grounds and bring them back on speed and on par with it’s predecessors?

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

dhobi_bhai thanks for a detail update...this is interesting. I hope we can produce some good bowlers tu maza aye cricket dekhnay ka in newly built stadiums mai.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

West Indies deal secured 2011 World Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revealed that the vote of the West Indies, in favour of Asia, proved decisive in winning them the right to host the 2011 World Cup and beating the joint proposal of Australia and New Zealand.
Shaharyar Khan, the PCB chairman, told PTI soon after his return from the ICC meeting in Dubai, “The African countries were with us but the vote by the West Indies proved decisive.” The vote meant that India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will host the 2011 World Cup.
There were reports in the Pakistani press that lucrative financial rewards were promised to the West Indies in return for their vote. Seemingly, these have been confirmed by comments from I S Bindra, former president of the BCCI, who told reporters in Abu Dhabi, “We have a commitment with the West Indies Board to raise funds to help in next year’s World Cup by playing a three-match series in North America. They played a key role in our bid to win the 2011 World Cup and to help them is an obligation.” Shaharyar, however, refused to reveal why the West Indies voted in favour of Asia despite having a history of supporting Australia and England.
Karachi-based daily The News reported that on the eve of the meeting, the Asian bid had six guaranteed votes (the four bidding countries plus South Africa and Zimbabwe), one short of the seven needed. The WICB, which is in severe financial difficulties, was then presented with a development plan aimed at boosting the game domestically.
“It was a case of Pakistan and India telling the West Indies `you support us and we will help you revive cricket in the West Indies’,” a Pakistan Cricket Board official was quoted as saying. He added that with the seventh vote secured, associate members like Malaysia, the UAE and Israel then voted in favour of the Asian bid.
“The two African nations have traditionally closer ties with Asia than with Australia, New Zealand and England and that mattered a lot in the end,” the official added. “The Afro-Asia Cup series held last year also helped in the two African nations going the Asian way.” As per the Asian proposal, 15 venues will be used for 51 matches with eight venues in India, four in Pakistan, two in Bangladesh and one in Sri Lanka. India will host 22 games, Pakistan 14, Sri Lanka nine and Bangladesh six. The venues of the semi-finals and the final are yet to be decided.
Shaharyar also said that guarantees have been given on the status of security-sensitive venues such as Karachi and Colombo and if required further will be given. “The event is still five years away and we will keep monitoring the situation. Security guarantees have been given by our respective governments.”
Any such guarantees will be important if a repeat of the 1996 World Cup is to be avoided: then, Australia and the West Indies forfeited their Colombo matches. Karachi, on the other hand, has only recently seen the return of top-flight cricket after three years of being ignored. A number of top teams, including Australia, South Africa and England, have refused to play in Karachi because of security fears. But recently, India and England have played ODI matches in the port city and the former even played a Test there earlier this year in January.

So it was England who voted for Australia and NZ.
*BTW, if Windies had voted for Aus/NZ, would it have made a big difference? *
Asia just needed 1 vote and they still had UAE, Malaysia and Israel for it.

Re: Asia to host 2011 World Cup!!!

Seems like they were "thaali ke baingan", voted for venue which gained "majority" already.
