**Pakistan gets ACC clearance to host Asia Cup in 2006 **

KARACHI: Pakistan has been cleared by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to host the ninth edition of the Asia Cup one-day tournament in March next year.

A senior Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official confirmed on Tuesday that Pakistan would host the event from the second half of March and that India, Sri Lanka along with Bangladesh had given their confirmations at the ACC meeting held in Dubai on Monday.

“We still have to finalise the playing conditions of the tournament but it is confirmed that besides the four Test-playing nations there will also be two qualifiers,” the official said.

Pakistan has never hosted the Asia Cup since its inception in 1984 —mainly due to its hot and cold diplomatic and cricket relations with India.

The official however said that what was confirmed was that there would be no rain days in the tournament and teams would carry their points into final round unlike the last tournament in Sri Lanka where there were rain days and teams didn’t get to carry their points from the preliminary rounds.

The last edition of the tournament held in Sri Lanka ran for nearly three weeks in July-August last year, but the PCB official said Pakistan would hold the Asia Cup for a lesser duration of time.

He said ACC had also decided to postpone the tsunami relief fund match which was shifted from February 13 to April 23rd in Kolkata. “The reason is that in April it is the monsoon weather in Bengal and it’s too hot. The feeling is also that a delay till April will nullify the basic purpose of hosting such a match. No fresh date of venue has been decided for the tsunami game,” he stated. ACC had shifted the tsunami relief fund game from February 13 because of non-availability of leading players.

The first tsunami relief fund match was held in Melbourne on January 14 between the Asian Eleven and World Eleven.

The official said India’s representative and the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Jagmohan Dalmiya had also not given any fresh update on the hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy in India next year. “This will now be decided at the ICC meeting in March,” he said.

Although India is due to host the Champions Trophy but ICC has asked it for assurances that the Indian government will exempt the earnings of the tournament from all taxes.
