Yes of course, but do not view that as Sunnah … the Sunnah is the fast of 10th and the intended Sunnah is the fast of the 9th and 10th because the intent of RasoolAllah (SAW) was to fast on the 9th and 10th for Ashura with the intent to continue the Sunnah of Musa (AS), but he (SAW) had passed on before then … The other days 1st to 8th are nafils only and days that are not to be fasted are the two Eids in the Islamic year … on them it is forbidden to fast.
