England’s cricketers will witness some of the human suffering caused by the devastating earthquake in Pakistan when they visit children receiving emergency treatment in hospital for their injuries on Friday.

England captain Michael Vaughan is to be joined by Ashley Giles, Marcus Trescothick and Matthew Hoggard on a goodwill trip to Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) where more than 1,000 children have been admitted over the past 20 days.

The October 8 quake is believed to have killed nearly 80,000 people and left more than three million homeless, and young victims are still being flown by Chinook helicopters to the treatment centre in the capital, which is the nearest major city to the earthquake’s epicentre.

Vaughan and his team-mates will be helping to unload some of the aid being sent to PIMS, and England are also set to take part in a gold day in Lahore to generate more funds as well as raising a collective donation from match fees for the one-day international schedule at the Gaddafi Stadium next month.

England were planning a visit to a centre such as PIMS during this early stage of their eight-week tour even before the earthquake struck northern Pakistan and India - and some members of the England and Wales Cricket Board accompanying the team have already been to the hospital this week.

An ECB spokesman gave an indication of what the players can expect to find there.

“It is the main treatment centre for children who were injured in the earthquake,” he said.

“Many of them have suffered serious injuries, and when we went there we saw several amputees.” The trip has been organised following consultation with the British High Commission, based in Islamabad.
