As ?

I am confused about (AS) put after the name of holy personalities. I thought it was only put after Prophets pof God like Dawood,Joseph, Aisa or Muhammad. But I have seen shias put after Imams too and qadianis after Mirza’s name but never have seen them putting after Hazrat Aisa (AS) name! . Does it signify anything ? Is there any sign in which we differenciate prophets of God from other holy personalities?

Deggie...…AS is shorthand for Alahe-Salam (meaning Peace be upon him/her). If you like, you can put it after your name too (you already have an AS after your name), or after Gandhi Jee’s name. It’s not copyrighted. People put A after my name out of respect.

Thanx for reply.. so we only send blessing to some chosen ones! So we dont have any particular thing that differenciate prophets of God from others.. I was wondering why shias use AS after their imams whereas sunnies use RA on all except Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and have seem Ahmadis uding AS after Mirza but nothing after Christ or other prophets.. As u say it doesnt matter at all.

Well, I don't know about shias...I'm a sunni and sunnies don't use AS after anyone's name except the Prophets of God..

AS(alehis salaam) is used after names of the Prophets who came before Mohammed(pbuh), SAW(sallallahu alehe wasallam) is used for the last Prophet(Mohammed), and RA(Razi allahu ta'la anhu) is used for the campanions of Mohammed(saw).

It should be used for all the Prophets except the last one and Angels.

Dear brother Degas,

As Athari has said, 'Alayhi-salaam should only be used for the Angels and the Prophets of Allaah, except for Muhammad salallaahu 'alayhi wassalam, upon whom we send salutations as well as peace (salaam).

RadhiAllaahu anhu/anha/unhum etc is to be used for the Companions of the Messenger - salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam.

RaheemuAllaah/raheemhumallaah etc is for other noble people/scholars who have passed away.

And HafithAllaah is for those noble people/scholars who are living.

... and Allaah - subhaana wa ta'aala - knows best.

&peace

"No leaf falls except that He knows of it, and no rain drop forms except that He has willed it."

Does anyone know how it all started? Is it part of the Hadiths or Sunnah or did someone later on made that tradition? From the Hadiths, it seems that Sahabah (ra) used to call AnHazoor (saw) "O Allah's Apostle" or "O messenger of Allah" or "O Abu-al-Qasim" etc. Similarly, when the names of other prophets were mentioned, they were not always followed by any suffix or had a prefix attached.

I don't consider these phrases something rigid but a natural show of respect, which developed into a norm.
