as people celebrate the new year's...

for abundance, joy and wealth. amidst all this, and all around this little affluence, may we also be able to think of the poverty in the world and its impact on human life. injustice, greed, monstrous acts of torture, horrible terror, social ill of dependency, exploitation, plunder, mischief, disgrace, disdain, carnage, malice, ignorance, mean, conniving, cunning, deceit and waste of life/property with so much more that is life destructive…all instruments of inhumanity.

any thoughts on how to rid the world, in little ways through and where each one of us is, in an effort to make the world a better place for the next generation?

share your thoughts if you like.

Re: as people celebrate the new year's...

Human beings are hardly a self motivated creature. Society needs to impose upon them social and moral obligations to pick up that task.

This is why religion is so important, because in many cultures and social setups that is the only source of imposing such obligations.

And it does not stop here. Think of the long term consequences of couples "living together" without marriages, nudity, vulgarity, alcohol, gambling.

These things have proved themselves as evil choices in western world, yet they have no basis to stop them cause their free will, free speech society cannot stop a person to commit adultery or what not.

Religion offers that solution

Re: as people celebrate the new year's...

I agree. Religious values are the easiest way of guiding human beings. I think everything starts at home, our moral obligations, our choices. If I can be a good example for my children then I am on the right track.

Re: as people celebrate the new year's...

i still dont know what really celebration means?

Re: as people celebrate the new year's...

Celebration to me is indulging yourself in a festive mindset where you dont worry about your problems anymore, for a short while. You live in that moment and cause moment is a happy moment, you feel happy.

Kind of like "happy hour" concept in a bar, or going on a vacation where you forget about your routine life.

Only thing is, to celebrate, you need a reason. To go to "happy hour" you dont :D

Re: as people celebrate the new year's...

Unfortunately Dushwari, this new year I and the people around me were only able to think of injustice, greed, inhumanity, waste of life/property etc.

As you may know in Kenya we are experincing shocking events after our elections.

But I see the positive attitude of people here. Despite all odds, people have decided to attempt a local initaitive to promote peace amongst ourselves. All over media is doing its utmost to heal the rift created in a matter of days. Instead of the blame game, they are more focused on finding out the solution to the violence and senseless carnage. Previously neighbours, friends, colleagues...now people viewing each other with an unspoken barrier, tension and suspicion. I can see the effort that is being made in trying to heal.

I do pray that the New Year unfolds with a stronger bond than ever before between ourselves.

Re: as people celebrate the new year's...

in order for injustice to end, humans need to identify each others as humans. we are putting religion, identity, class and nationality ahead of us. if we start thinking of each other as human beings first, than those differences would bring us together rather tear us apart.

Re: as people celebrate the new year’s…

but happy people dont need a reason to get happy
