Thank you Mr. Fraudia.
I was about to post a similar message in this section . . . .
Wonder what happened? You think MTV is at fault or could the previous generation have caused this gap?
Hey to both of ya,
Speaking of MTV, there is a little point that bugs me. When I was in Kuwait, I use to watch MTV Asia, and that channel was not suitable for some one not mature enough. Fine with every body. No one complained. But now that I'm here in Canada, I also watch the music channel here, but the name of nudity is in the least form of existence. Dont you all think that this is a concpiracy by the non Muslims and a reason for the downfall for our community.

I am not sure, I think its a combination of several factors.
1- There has been little or no emphasis on our cultural heritage in the mass media in Pakistan. I am not going to go in details about it, but we have not even made any TV movies about our leaders. Let alone any support for the arts on a National scale.
2- We all know so many folks who have some complex where they have to speak english, whether they can or not is a whole different story, quoting famous authors and poets from England or even Russia is kinda chic. Its considered backwards if you use urdu quotes.
What did we expect the kids of these ppl to turn out to be. I have witnessed numerous students who were in Pakistan for 18-20 years, and now after living in US for 4 years. they "cant" speak urdu, or they have forgotten.. ummm yeah sure.
This is what I wonder. For someone who was born in the Uk and grew up outside Pakistan, if I can develop an appreciation for Ibn-e-safi, mushtaq ahmed Yousufi, Shafeeq Ur Rehman and Ibn-e-Insha and our great poets like Ghalib and Dard of the old school and Iqbal, Ahmed Faraz, Faiz and Ghaznawi of more recent times. Why is it that so many people who grew up in Pakistan do not develop an appreciation for them.
Hey, I still say that Bond is Great, but X2 is no easy competition.
There is nothing wrong in appreciating the best other cultures have to offer, but one should not forget their own heritage in the proccess.

Good points made.
I too have come across numerous individuals/families where three to five years after they have landed on this side of the world, they forget how to speak urdu.
Recently a friend mentioned that his cousins in Lahore (i.e. people that have been born and bred there) do not speak urdu as I do -- where I have schooled entirely in the west.
I attribute my urdu skills (reading, writing and oral) to the dedication of my parents. Their unrelenting efforts and their persistence. To this day urdu only is spoken at home, especially in the presence of impressionable children.
They way I look at, if as parents you can recognize the value of our language, heritage and culture, you will instill the same in your offspring.
And no doubt --- Bond, as played by Sean is amazing . . .
Now if I can only get a movement started to somehow make a movie based on either Imran series i.e x2, or Himaqatain..the book by shafeeq ur Rehman. My favourite character is roofi AKA Shaitan in that book. BTW, I am desperate to fgind a copy of the movie "Dhamaka" the pakistani one I mean. It has Javed Sheikh acting as Prince Zaffar .. teh character from Imran series books, the movie was directed by the great Ibn-e-safi himself. It was a flop in Pakistan ( yeah that doesnt say much cuz the hit movies at that time showed a 9000000 year old fat Mohammad Ali as a college boy) anyways I just wanted to see how the picturised those characters. Any hints where I can find the flick. A few years ago on my visit to Pakistan I looked all over Karachi.. but to no avail... HELP!!!
Being outside of Pakistan myself, I'm afraid I won't be much help with sourcing.
I have heard about Himaqatain . . . .not enough to comment on it . . . so I'll have to do some reading. . .
Try Mazeed Himaqatain as well.
On a different but related note. any Ibn-e-Insha fans out here. I dunno what book it was, either "urdu ki akhri Kitaab" or "Dunya Gol Hai" in which he has cartoons to illustrate his ideas.. one cartoon is about the circle ( its a chapter on geometry in the book) and it says that there used be a a dairah of islam, In old days we used to add ppl to it, now we just kick em out.. the cartoon has a mullah with a big stick going around in this small circle and thus pushing ppl out. that was too funny.
Hi Muzna/Mr. Fraudia..actually adaab arz karta hoon !!
I agree with both of your points. Certainly, I living most of my hayaat in England have taken the trouble to learn Urdu because of many reasons but above all an appreciation of my own culture.
Most Pakistanis growing up in the UK though couldn't even tell you who Ghalib was!! And it is even worse if that is the situation of the majority of our people back home. One word: education (or lack of it). sorry that's 4 words..
sorry guys, I don't listen to Western music much at all. I think it has nothing to offer ME personally.. aap log shawq se samaadh farmain..give me Mehdi Hassan any day.."zindageeeee mein to sabhi pyar kiya karte hainnnnnnnnn"" Wah Wah!!!
Best wishes!

ps I think our Govt. in Pakistan should set up a 'Wazaarat-e-Dafaa-e-Tehzeeb-o-Tammadan'.
Kya khyaal hai?
yara, I agree, wazzara-e-tahzib-o-tammaddun, definitely a great idea. But i will share a lil bit of humour with you... sad thing is.. its true.
The Building where the "urdu Dictionary Board' resides..has the name on a board.. both in english and in urdu as.."urdu dictionary board" even turks are better than us that they call their airline Turk hava Yolari. shouldnt this urdu dictionary board be called "idarah-e-lughat-e-urdu" I mean for a general store its fine but but bit.. its the dictionary board... it is equal to having a french name for the Oxford Dictionary Press.
Mr. Fraudia
Agreed that Bond is great, but X2 is definitely X2. For a copy of "DHAMAKA", I can only suggest this. There is a web page dedicated to Ibn-e-safi (www.ibnesafi.com). Go thier and ask them thru e_mail if they can help you ([email protected]).

Not yet. But lets see :)

---As Salaamu 'ala men ittaba wal huda,
If Pakistan is truly an Islamic state, and Pakistanis, for the most part, are muslims, then why has Urdu become such a pivotal language. Arabic is the language of the Qur'an and Islam. If we want our children to grow to be successful in this life and the hereafter we should be teaching them Arabic and the Qur'an and not filling their heads with ignorant ideas of Pakistani nationalism . I know plenty of devout Pakistanis who act ignorantly and depraved, yet speak Urdu fluently and quote Urdu poetry.
Islam is a religion which broke these bonds of nationalism (which Shaikh bin Baz has declared as a form of Shirk) why do you attempt to revert to the days of Jahiliyya. I, myself, am grateful to my Pakistani parents who were truthful and honest and didn't paint a false picture of the "magnificence" of Pakistan. I learned Urdu not to keep any ties with Pakistan or become a better person, I chose to learn it as I chose to learn other languages - as a means of giving Da'wah to the ignorant.
Urdu is a beautiful language, its imagery can rival the imagery of any language in the world. The issue is not whether it is pivotal or not. people can and should learn arabic, but urdu is our native tongue and we identify with it as much as we identify with our cuisine or literature.
I grew up in Uk, USA, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, but learnt urdu and learnt arabic as well.
However, I have seen many people who are fluent in arabic and are rather bad examples as muslims. Learning a lingo aint gonan do jack, its the spirit that one pursues it with.
As far as nationalism issues go, Islam is against boundaries for muslim states and it should be one khilafah. We thus are not pakistanis saudis kuwaitis etc but muslims and thus our passports are a sign of refusing a basic idea of islam.
You do as you please, I will do as I.
