Sadequain who died in the late 80s is the only artist from Pakistan that I know. He was well known for his calligraphy and I know him because they showed a few good programs about him on PTV when he died. Are there any others? What are their areas of interest?
Also, what value does art have in Pakistani culture? Basing it on my sheltered life, I can expect it to be a hobby of the rich elites like anywhere else in the world. Any famous art collectors in Pakistan? What is a normal price range for pieces sold at the National Art Gallery?

No one in Pakistan respects Art or artists even though we have such a rich culture. Do you see parents in Pakistan telling their kids to become artist? No. You can't make money and you won't be able to get the respect that is needed. Even Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan got the respect after he was given by the rest of the world. Isn't that just sad.

Yeah, I do remember Gulgee and his best work has been his sculptures. Right?
artists as in singers/actors get a lot of publicity and some of them get a lot of respect too but I was more interested in art as in painters.
NCA in Lahore was famous for having some of the best artists of the nation. Is there such a college in Karachi?

yes there are few.Indus valley school of art is a degree awarding institute and is purely arts related.Karachi school of art is another such institute who is producing many upcoming artists in the field of fine arts,textile designing and graphics designing.Fine Arts is also being taught at khi university,arts council and few degree colleges as a subject.Many small level schools and training institutes are also present in the town.
Artists are well known in the circles where art is being appreciated and enogh money could be spent to buy their collections.Pakistan being a not so rich country,where so many people are jobless and dont have enough to feed themselves, it doesnt leave them with an option to understand,appreciate and spent for fine arts in my humble opinion
