Arrogance

ARROGANCE…TAKABBUR

This is the worst personality trait a person can have. And it is even worse coz it is like a nasha, its intoxicating and addictive.

nothing warrants arrogance. In fact the more you achieve the humbler you should be as in the end its all a test from Allah. Allah tests some by giving them and some by taking from them.

The truest achievers I have seen are most humble.

Not to say I have anything to feel arrogant about, But, I do feel it creeping in sometimes  :frowning: and I have to jerk myself out of it. Its really scary :bummer:

But then again, sometimes you become arrogant about, ‘hey I’m so cool coz I don’t feel arrogant’…

:mudhosh:

I wish I could be truly humble…[and now i am thinking, wow i’m so cool coz i want to be humble  OMG :crying: ]

the only path to COMPLETE HUMILITY is TOTAL SUBMISSION TO ALLAH swt..ISLAM…

But then again, sometimes you become arrogant about, 'hey I'm so cool coz I don't feel arrogant'...

I've noticed that in my own self as well and then, after a while you realize what you're doing and snap out of it. I've been looking for some quality Islamic references on how to avoid this, you know something that just makes sense. Irem, if you have any please share them.

Waisay, over the years I've noticed people become more and more arrogant or maybe I've just started noticing this aspect of life just now. I guess the line between self-respect and arrogance is quite blurry.

regardless of that I guess the key is to remember the people who've accomplished much more than you (and there will always be tonnes of those) and thus, put your insignificant self in perspective.

:snooty:

hey sambrialian thanks for the reply  glad to see i am not the only one  :frowning:

i’ve actually experienced myself become progressively more arrogant/meaner over the yrs… :bummer:

not that i have succeeded in improving myself much but from an Islamic point of view, we could always tell ourselves this:

  • Allah tests some by giving them and some by taking from them. we have to pass His test. whatever He has given us is soooo temporary. tomorrow something could happen…KHUDANAKHASTA…a disease…who knows…we could get crippled…Allah despises arrogant ppl…

  • we should always always watch out for the other person’s feelings first if we are in a situation that involves someone else…thats the sign of a good person

  • i remember in college i took a class on Imam Ghazali, the medieval Islamic philosopher, and there we read that he suggested people can take up jobs like becoming the janitor of a public place, to kill their arrogance…*…ofcourse this would be a bit extreme tho…

u mentioned some great points too

anyways, i think we should just be conscious abt this and ALWAYS ALWAYS tell ourselves that this is our JAHAD-E-NAFS…

good luck bro…lets pray for each other :-)*

yaar trust me i am :frowning: :frowning: i shock and scare my ownself with my thinking somtimes :frowning: :frowning:

:teary1:

thanks tho :flower1:

I think I suffer from this problem too but when I realize what I’m upto I try to make a conscious effort to stop.

  • that is so true. all it takes is a couple of minutes and all that you pride yourself over can be taken away from you. I’ve seen one too many examples of that in the recent past. really makes you believe that there is a God and he is as Mighty as they say He is.

  • that is very true. generally your arrogance will hurt someone else and remembering that there is someone else involved too helps.

  • many great Sheikhs, sufis, and mystics used seemingly strange and extreme techniques to kill their nafs and self. you read them for the first time, it just goes way over your head. but when you do understand it, nothing makes more sense.

the biggest problem in my view with this trait is that it hinders your development and learning. and if you’re not growing as a person and become stagnant, you fail yourself as a human being.

thanks for your thoughts, Irem. I’ve been planning to do some reading on this myself. I’ll post here if I find something good. :)*

I must second SKN's thoughts. If there is a problem :D with you it is that you think too much. But then again I do too so, I shouldn't be lecturing you on that.

ther eis always someone more talented than you are or hasbetter attributes...simple reminder to self once in a while does the trick.

hmmm…i wrote a reply but edited it…to keep a pardah on my burais… hope no one read it :bummer:

the height of arrogance is to get a big head when someone is nice to you and take them for granted

:frowning:

I dont think there anything wrong with some arrogance.

I mean I can recall certain incidents that I got through because of arrogance.Im not saying its right, but theres a bit of it in everyone.

:bummer:

MQ, what you're talking about is self respect and there is nothing wrong with that. when your opinion of yourself gets a bit out of control that's when you get arrogance.

MQ i was gona say exactly what sambrialian said…but then again as sambrialian said where do u draw the line between self respect and arrogance?

i have a mini test for myself…whenever i am in this situation…i think in my heart…and try to take the softer, more rehmdil approach…when u know that u r not taking the decision coz of zidd after hardening ur heart…hope that makes some sense :mudhosh:

sambrialian theek hae ji aap bhee ura lo mera mazak :crying: joking

first time i find myself agreeing with you. well put, and yes, i'll keep that in mind next time im on my high horse.

good to see like minded people, irem and sambrilian. i tend to go in circles and circles trying to figure out how to stop myself from being proud without being proud of it.
