Arrests on downloading music

My roomies just informed me that some 12 year old girl and an old man and like 300 others got arrested recently for downloading music off the internet. How does this work with Pakistani music?

I am under the impression that most artists are okay with their music being on the internet…it actually promotes their music, especially overseas…

And how can you get arrested for DOWNLOADING music? That’s so dumb! why don’t they just shut down websites that are giving out the music?

And from what these girls are telling me, it seems that the US gov’t has the right to sue for downloading foreign music as well…is that even true?

I think arresting a 12 year old and some others for downloading music is going a little too far. However, that depends on how much music they were sharing as well. I heard people who are sharing 1000 files or more are being investigated.

I'm not sure about Pakistani music, but western musicians and bands, many of them aren't too happy about music sharing. It takes away from their livelihood. The songs that they do have available on their official websites are authorized to be shared by their record companies. Usually it's 1 or 2 songs from an album as promotion. However, as a result of file sharing, people are downloading complete albums and the record company and eventually the artist suffers.

Downloading copyrighted music is illegal. It's no different from stealing a sattelite signal.

would our pakistani music fall into the copyrighted arena?

I'm sure all professional music is copyrighted. Whether or not they care about people sharing their music to the same extent as the western music industry is another story.

I've also read that a law suits have been filed against those people who were sharing 1000's of music files on kazaa. some people are calling it a scare tactic of music industry, though. But the biggest arguement is why not shut down kazaa like they did napster? Why not get those companies who make cd burners? first they make available these tools in the market so easy and cheap and when people use them they're labeled criminals.

But rest assured nothing can be done about it. You can continue to shamelessly download music on kazaa :D. and as far as Pakistani music is concerened then harldly any of it is available on kazaa. It's all those mp3 sites that are providing it.

PCG, they are going to shut down websites too, thanks to the new law that they passed, its just a matter of time. As for arresting people, they have agents assigned all over, they gotta assign some work to them too, plus when they start doing that, other people are discouraged. Pakistani music will also fall in this category, and pirates will be caught ultimately. Two years back, a site offerring nusrat fateh ali khan titles was put down, as alot of his songs were copyrighted in the US.

What I heard is that RIAA has sent law suit notices to these 300 people. Not actually arrested them. In atleast one case, the person "settled" by paying $1,000 in fines and promising not to share illegal music any more.

It’s a madnesss - the whole thing is just ridiculous - they(RIAA) should acknowledge that because of the Internet they get a lot more free promotion and global market - and see the downloading as a tool of that - they’re a bunch of sad old people who don’t understand a thing.

i just downloaded AJ's album off pakmusic. its very nice. i'm enjoying it :)

firstly the the RIAA (Recording Industry of American Association) is suing individuals who illegally attainging the music which is recorded by them. Basically 99% of english music is made by RIAA members. Those members are like of Sony and some other monoply-big recording companies.

They were the one who kicked Napste and because napster was centralised.. e.g the files went through there service. So it was easier to stop that. But now new file-swapping softwares like KaZaa, dont have centralisation. meaning taht they cannot just kill KaZaa the company and the swapping wil stop. Becuase we are using the software, and the sharing is done one on one.. no intemediry, where as in Napsters case there was.

And becasue they cannot just stop KaZaa like Napster, they are goin after individuals. At the moment it is only in USA.. i dono if that includes paki songs or not.. but i think they dont really give care about them yet.. since paki companies(unless Sony) are not that big, and dont have the power to go after individuals.

The reason y ppl are resorting to attain music illegaly is due to ridiculous prices set on the CDs.. which can be copied for 1/29 the cost!!.. anyway .. if u live in USA.. HAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAA. u guys suck.. anyway.. me enjoying here in NZ.. even though there is a law against pirating music.. but ppl still do it.. and we have plenty of illegal software,.. whcih i think u guys are not allowed:rotfl:

i wrote a report on this.. there are plenty of mistakes.. but it explains well..
Anyway.. see ya

Allah hafiz

Hmm, havent heard of any arrest owing to RIAA filing piracey lawsuits and they have filed 261 so far. maybe the girl you are talking about is this and her mother settled out of court by paying $2000 in fines.
RIAA settles with 12-year-old pirate’s mother

Just make sure you if you need to download KaZZa or KaZZa Lite, that you download them from the official sites. Dont download from any links that you may receive in your emails or posted on some musci message boards. One of the ways RIAA is getting into the network and snooping on Kazaa users is by distributring bogus copies of kazaa-lite.
