ISLAMABAD: A non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Makhdoom Shahabuddin in the ephedrine quota case, DawnNews reported.
President Zardari had nominated Shahabuddin as a candidate for the new prime minister. He had also filed his nomination papers for the slot on Thursday.
The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) issued warrants against Shahabuddin, Musa Gilani and one other person.
Earlier on June 7, Regional Director of the ANF Brig Fahim Ahmed Khan had told the Supreme Court that the ANF had widened its inquiry against Shahabuddin who he said had ordered the local conversion of ephedrine after Berlex Lab International and Danas Pharma (Pvt) Ltd failed to export asthma drugs to Afghanistan.
The ephedrine scam had come to light in April when the ANF informed a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, that the ephedrine quota worth Rs7 billion was given to two Multan-based companies on the pressure of an influential person.
The case was registered on October 10 last year after two pharmaceutical companies – Danas Pharmaceutical and Berlex Lab International – were held responsible for obtaining export quotas for the drug in collusion with the health ministry officials that exceeded the limits fixed by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).
The INCB had fixed a quota of 22,000kg of ephedrine for Pakistan for 2010-11, but the ministry of health allocated a quota of around 31,000kg after devolution.

Re: Arrest warrant issued against Makhdoom Shahabuddin
Its very heart breaking to see ruthless thugs being in charge of peoples well being.
Muzna, if you follow last 8 weeks of case proceedings in SC for speaker's ruling and in INF for ephedrine, you would come to the conclusion that both of these verdicts were coming and people who saw it coming, brought the whole Malik Riyaz fiasco on SC face to shake CJ's confidence and support.
Senior analysts were saying this happening since mid of May but general people had this perception that its going to be another 'gol mol' verdict/pending/blah from SC. But here we are with drug smuggler kicked out of the PM house and another one trying to get in.
Re: Arrest warrant issued against Makhdoom Shahabuddin
Nice move by SC but Zardari not so stupid to secrifying a pawn without nothing. Basat bichi hui hai hard to read out what is in Zardari's mind seems defensive tho but still in the game.
Re: Arrest warrant issued against Makhdoom Shahabuddin
his name is on Exit control list!
The two officials maintain ANF has ample evidence against Shahabuddin, who, while serving as the federal minister for health, sent his agent Anjum Shah to then director general (DG) Health Dr Rasheed Jumma for the allocation of a 2,500kg ephedrine quota to Danas Pharmaceutical Islamabad. This information was contained in their written submission to the court.
According to their application, Shahabuddin later pressurised Dr Jumma to convert the ephedrine export quota for domestic consumption. His agent Anjum personally delivered the conversion orders to the owner of Danas Pharmaceutical, Ansar Farooq, and his partner Tahirul Wadood Lahoti.
The officials further say that Ansar Farooq allegedly paid up to Rs6 million to then health minister Shahabuddin for obtaining the quota.
During the hearing at the magistrate’s court, ANF Commander Brigadier Faheem and Investigating Officer (IO) Abid Zulfiqar also presented a report stating they had evidence and witness testimonies proving the direct involvement of both Shahabuddin and Ali Musa Gilani in providing the illegal quota of ephedrine.
Forwarding a request to be an immunity-granted witness, former DG Health Dr Rasheed Jumma verified in his statement to the investigation team that it was Shahabuddin who approved the 6,000kg ephedrine quota allotment to Berlex Lab International and 2,500kg to Danas Pharmaceutical. He added that Ali Musa Gilani pressed for the allotment of the quota as well.
Records from the devolved federal health ministry indicate that Shahabuddin, during his tenure as health minister, also allowed Danas Pharmaceutical to import 5,000kg of dextropropoxyphene, a controlled substance used in the manufacture of the medical drug darvon, from India in 2010, reliable sources told The Express Tribune.
Danas Pharmaceutical is also one of the two pharmaceutical companies alleged to have benefitted from the ephedrine scandal. Double jeopardy: Forget ephedrine
