I got married in 1998 and we had one combined reception as well, paid for by both sides. Nikkah was preformed on the stage in front of all 385 people, ruhkhsati took place that night. We had a small joint mehndi function the night before.

The time from the engagement to wedding was 3 months. It’s totally doable.

My sister got married this summer and I planned the whole thing in 8 weeks.

I have a cousin getting married May 2016, her nikkah will be outdoor late afternoon in a garden, followed by a joint reception. The night before my khala is having a small mayoun function at their house.

OP, it’s perfectly fine to have one combined reception. Different fiqhs in Islam have differing views on weather a Walima MUST be after the wedding is consummated. It’s a sunnat, follow it the best you can and don’t sweat all the cultural dogma that plagues our weddings. Do whatever is right for you and your fiance and your respective families.

This. Also, you will find different opinions within the same school of thought. It’s a minority that connect Walima to consummation.

Most weddings these days, especially the ones in more religious families (and really, very different types when it comes to the rest of their practise) are just one joint reception some time after a small more intimate nikkah at home or at a mosque.
