anyone got any info on the pros and cons of going to this institute.
Cons:
1. You have to wear some type of army uniform
2. You have to run every morning I believe
3. You have to spend 1 year at kakul in abbotabad once you graduate
4. You will have to be more behaved and disciplined
Pros:
1. Your a doctor AND in the army! The only two respectable positions pakistanis like and want, and you got both.
2. The studying will be much easier
3. They train you to be a doctor, not a book memorizer
4. Cheaper. I heard you actually get paid to go if your in it.
I'm not sure about all this stuff, but just what I've heard from people in Rawalpindi.
Im not too sure about the cons mentioned by yusuf1982 above ( 1, 2 and 4).
I have a cousin who graduated from Army Medical College. His wife is also a gradaute from there. They are both Major Doctors now (Mashallah). When you go to Army Med College, you are expected to wear the uniform after you graduate DUH. Thats the whole point i.e You are in the Army. If you dont like Army, dont go there. You will be expected to serve in the Army.
My cousin and his wife didnt have to run during the morning, while they were in the college. I dont think it has changed. And thirdly, its nice to behave and show discipline, so how is that a con?
My cousin after he graduated from Army Medical College, spent the mandatory time at Kakul, learning to be an Army Officer. He was then sent to Siachin glacier. That was his first post after being inducted officially as an Army doc. He spent 6 months there during the winters, treating the soldiers at worlds highest battelfield. That ofcourse was very tough for him, but it came with joining the Army. (His wife was not sent with him, the women folkds are not allowed to go to Siachen etc). So he didnt visit family for 6 months that he was stationed there.
Well, to some people it could be the biggest drawback, cos Army can send you anywhere there are soldiers to treat them and that can include Siachen. You cant turn that down or opt out of it. These are orders and as an Army officer you cant turn down the orders.
Yes, my cousin and his wife got their money's worth studying at Army Med College. They are one of the finest to wear the uniform. And they gradauted in 4 years, with no extra innings due to political and extracurricular halla-gulla.
The best thing about this college is that it is now part of NUST
No NUST is a part of the AMC. They give NUST about 40 seats each year ... i thinks.
I want to join as a paying cadet. But... there are no oficial websites that i can check out.
I dont mind the dicipline... its part of being in the army.
If anyone has any websites ..... please mention em.
Ebenzer, the degree you get after attending AMC is from NUST… NUST is nothing on its own, it has constituent campuses (which were good former colleges on their own at one point).

Army Medical College,(AM College), Rawalpindi
Army Medical College is a model institution for medical education in the country which offers undergraduate courses in medicine and dental surgery. The graduates from AM College are the pride of medical profession not only in Pakistan but also throughout the world. The disciplined environment conducive for regular academic schedule and limited number of students make the college distinctive among other medical colleges of the country.
The highly qualified and dedicated faculty available in the college pays individual attention to the students. The college is administered by the administrative division headed by the Principal. The teaching departments are organised in basic medical sciences division, medical division, surgical division and laboratory division. In addition, a department of medical education has been created to oversee the academic activities of the departments and keep abreast with the modern trends in medical education.
Education in the clinical subjects is imparted at the affiliated hospitals and institutes that include Military Hospital (MH), Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Armed Forces Institute of Transfusion (AFIT), Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry (AFID), Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFIRM) and Armed Forces Institute of Urology (AFIU).
A very well stocked college library with about 75000 books and 100 different medical journals is located within the college campus and provides an ideal atmosphere for a quiet study. Besides the books on medical subjects, a good number of books on general knowledge, sociology, religion and fiction are also available.
College sports committee plans, organizes and conducts competitions for athletics, cricket, hockey, football, basket ball, table tennis, squash and body building. Sufficient indoor facilities exist in the college campus to carry out these sports activities on regular basis. Recently swimming pool has been constructed to add charm to the college life.
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS):
The 5 year programme of MBBS is a blend of bio-medical and clinical sciences which are traditionally required for medical graduates to meet the responsibilities of providing preventive as well as curative health care. In order to achieve the objective of producing a high degree of professionalism in the doctors it has been considered appropriate to follow the curriculum prescribed by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council with some flexibility. The course lays comparatively greater emphasis on the clinical and on the job training during the final year.
Bachelor of Dental Surgery(BDS):
The four year degree programme of BDS meets the requirements of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. It is a combination of hardcore subjects of dentistry with medical and basic sciences. Clinical training in the dental disciplines is imparted at the Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry (AFID) which is equipped with modern facilities in the subject. The specifically designed programme aims at exposing the students to real life problems including radical art in clinical dental practice. The students are provided with a solid foundation of basic principles of medicine, diagnostics and surgical techniques to meet the challenges of the future in the field of dentistry.
There used to be a site run by the alumni : http://amcolians.net/ but its down at the moment.

Well, he/she is probably used to the life in the US, trust me, NUST has some disciplines/norms which he/she may not feel comfortable with. But ofcourse, people like me were considered rebels in NUST, I preferred to have gotten fined rather than shave every day and get those haircuts ![]()
