Arm falling asleep!

As stupid as this may sound, it’s something i’m very concerned about. i often wakeup in the middle of night with my arm SO numb that it doesn’t get better for a couple of minutes and i start panicking.

Does this happen to anyone to anyone else? and is it possible for someones arm or any other body part that falls asleep, to become so numb that is never “wakes up”? :bummer:

Re: Arm falling asleep!

I can relate to what you are saying. It is perfectly normal for a body part, sometimes more than one, to fall asleep when you apply the pressure on the nerves, hence blocking the blood flow to that certain part of the body, which renders it ineffective, hence the term "fell asleep".

My toe has been asleep for quite some time and I haven't had it checked out but I should. Maybe a little research on it would get me or you somewhere for your certain body part. A lot of times it happens to people when they are sitting down for prayers and when they sit without changing movements, a part of leg becomes numb. Although not as bad as what I have in my toe.

So what do you do when your body part/s go numb?

Re: Arm falling asleep!

thankfully, nothing has been numb for more than a couple of mins, but even that scares me. my entire arm falls asleep every other night, maybe because i sleep on my stomach and my hand is usually underneath me. but anyhow, when i wakeup i start panicking because it feels like i don't even have an arm, it's really scary. i shake it really hard and massage it with force, trying to get the blood to flow and it gets better within minutes...but everytime it happens, i fear it'll never get better.

Well, that's the issue, which you described. If you are sleeping for hours on your stomach with your hand sandwiched between the mattress and your body, you are not going to feel your hand because you are putting pressure on it the whole night. See if you can substitute with a pillow or even a blanket or a cover that goes underneath, something other than your hand.

Re: Arm falling asleep!

that is the issue, but i'm still concerned whether it's possible for my arm to become numb for good if i sleep on it for too long.

Re: Arm falling asleep!

lol
I reminds me of some thing very funny once my nephew said.

Re: Arm falling asleep!

^what'd he say?

Re: Arm falling asleep!

He was hyper active. At night it was hard to put him on bed and to sleep.
As a result he use to wake up cranky in the morning crying while SIL giving him shower etc.
One day I was driving him back from school I asked him "T school meen neend to naheen aai"
HE goes "chacoo meen to jagta raha , per mery tang so gaaee thi"

Re: Arm falling asleep!

do you have low bp by any chance marwah

lol..aw, how cute!

hm..no i think it's just about right.

Re: Arm falling asleep!

marwah even my arm falls asleep when i am sleeping at night....

mum told me yesteday that she couldnt feel her hands for about 20 min during day time even though she was doing house work when that happened.

i too get my hand numb but mainly my face and hand have too much swelling. my face in the morning is huge and gets better after 30 min or so and if i wear rings and sleep, they get stuck on my fingers. i think these things are normal

Re: Arm falling asleep!

^they are normal. but my question still hasn't been answered yet.

Re: Arm falling asleep!

It happens to me too , it is normal I guess , may be some doctor in the house could provide more information.

Yeah, its normal.

Re: Arm falling asleep!

haha some funny stories here! A couple more…first my mom used to tell us kids that when we made horrible funny faces that we better cut-it-out or our faces would get stick in that position for the rest of our lives!

Second…marwah I had a similar thing but it was with my LEG. That can be worse since you get up for a nature call and dont realize that your leg no longer works!!! I fell flat on my face with my full weight in the middle of the night one time! The crash must have been horrible, my parents thought a wrecking crane was attacking our house!

As hard as it can be, you should try to change your sleeping position so that you dont cut off the circulation to your arm. But it will not become permanently disabled from sleeping on it!!

Heres a link for you
Why do parts of our bodies “fall asleep”?

Re: Arm falling asleep!

^lol omg! that sounds bad. and thankyou Mamaof3, for actually replying to my question rather than just telling me it's normal :p

hahaha wowww that happened to me once! where i woke up one morning and couldnt feel my right leg and fell really hard. and about the horrible face sticking in that position forever thing..my mom says that to us too! LOL she scares my younger brother because he’s always making weird faces and rolling his eyes all weird
