Regarding drug abuse. I am not talking about illegal substances, I am talking about legal and most of the times over the counter substances which are freely available. Are you doing anything to safe guard your children regarding this since, if I am not mistaken, there is a more chance of this kind of thing occurring in the West?
I was reading an article about Dubai Teens and kids. The latest trend is Huffing and that also using a lethal gas. The children attend parties where they are provided with Butane Canisters, Correction Fluid, Cough Syrup, Muscle Relaxants and Alcohol. Children and Teens then use a number of ways to get high. Apart from Alcohol, these are all things were are very easily accessible. 2 kids died in Dubai because of this reason and 4 girls were burnt in a Mirdif Villa Butane gas blast.
Butane gas and other legal substance drug abuse have severe short term and long term consequences which does include death.
If your children are young, or babies, what would you do to make sure your child does not get in to this kind of stuff when they grow up?
Icono it is not always this easy. Let's say for example you have a daughter and she has a friend. You know about that friend and trust the girl. You let your daughter go to her house. The same friend has organised one of these parties. This is what happened in the case of the party where 2 kids died. Oh and most of the times the kids don't know what they are doing is lethal.
Aisha, it ultimately all comes down to parenting. If parents do a good job of raising their kids and teaching them right from wrong, when they are faced with a situation where peer pressure may compel them to do something wrong, alarm bells will go off and they will remove themselves from the situation. This is where parents need to do the right thing from day 1, instead of babying their children, raise them with love, affection, respect, and teach them independence and decision making.

Let them know right from wrong and teach them to protect themselves. Invariably they will avoid such company.
I believe parents should be constantly aware of who their children hang out with, the company they keep. It also helps to talk to your children about the dangers. Parents should not be afraid of bringing up these subjects and have a open discsussion.
