Re: ARE YOU...

come again?..

Re: ARE YOU...

In a way we’re all ‘creatures of habits’. Perhaps you want to discuss how we can grow out of bad habits? Well it takes a realization that the habit we have developed is not good for us, which must be followed by a strong desire to change. With effort and determination, I’m sure, we can break even deeply embedded habits.

Re: ARE YOU...

I won't delve deep into this but I reckon that human beings, influenced by their surroundings, are tricked into treading a territory they would have never imagined to stroll in. Not all blame goes to these vaguely defined 'surrounding influences'. It sometimes rests on our genetic traits having a tendency to follow a certain ancestral habit. In such a case, the surroundings, or the inner temptation acts as a catalyst.

I concede that the issue on hand is more subtle and pretty complex than the way I have put. lol :)

Re: ARE YOU...

there is no such thing as a creature of habit. there is voluntary repetitive behavior, there is unthinking repetitive bahavior and there is involuntary repetitive behavior.
All these may be termed habits. No creature ceases to form or to exist when a habit is stopped (or stops).

We are constantly looking for ways to explain things to ourselves and others and the 'creature of habit' kind of description is just one such useless concept.

Re: ARE YOU...

^

May I request you to briefly define 'voluntary repetitive, unthinking repetitive and involuntary repetitive behaviours' with at least one example of each if possible.

Regards.

Re: ARE YOU...

I like the crisp morning air and take a walk for 15 mins everyday.

I don't wear ties on Fridays but when I get home and kick my shoes of, I try to loosen the non-existent tie.

can habits be changed?

Re: ARE YOU...

^ yes they can be changed but only if we are determined about it that we do need to change them.

Re: ARE YOU...

ofcourse. when the benefit perceptions change.

Re: ARE YOU...

that and also when people truly begin to realize that they have to do what is necessary for them to do, without taking a hike in the compliance to wrong learnt habits. it takes a daring within person resolve to make changes one step at a time. & then it becomes nature.

Re: ARE YOU...

One other thing (personal experience) that may interest you.

A deliberately self-created belief worked in my case to break a habit!

Re: ARE YOU...

I would rather say habits of creatures.

I believe that habits are formed voluntarily, even if many times this is not realised. It is similar to teaching circus animals some random tricks. If the trick is performed, the animal is rewarded. In case of habits, we are the instructors and we are the animals ourselves. We are somehow rewarded when we act that habit out.

There may be a lot of justification, some valid and some invalid, behind a certain habit. To overcome a habit, stimulus might come internally or it may be an external one.

Re: ARE YOU...

a case in point.

denial and theft.
scenario: someone lying on purpose to deceive and then to benefit from someone who is kept in the dark.
the other person knows that s/he is being kept in the dark, but keeps quiet.
observes.
the person who is in denial & deceiving the other person, little by little justifies, 'it's fine if i am being playful'. & after a while it becomes a comfortable habit.
& leads to further errors ethical and intellectually flawed.
who is to say who is not to blame?

the one who is playing neutral, or the one who is playing too smart?
whose habit is more worse or are they both equally party to being creatures of their independent yet collaborative habits which lead them to err in denial, deception and not disallowing?
