One word: Titanic. 
On a serious note, I don’t think any mode of travel is 100% safe. The chances of getting hurt or killed in an auto accident are much higher than on a plane and most people aren’t apprehensive about driving.

The most apprehensive people have to be law enforcement. Since they apprehend criminals.

one Indian Minister never traveled by air. he always took the train, even to the far corner of the country.
a news reporter asked him why doesn’t he ever fly to his destination. he replied in his broken English as follows:
"in case of train accident…rescue people will say…"there he is!, while
"in case of air accident…rescue people will say…“where he is?”
