no backbiting is just talking about someone behind their back....not necessarily a lie though.

i lie sometimes where required at job etc. - but i do not lie to people such as friends or family

There's a difference between gossiping and backbiting. Gossiping is what you described (talking about someone behind their back). Backbiting would be acting like you like someone when you're with them and then saying bad things about them behind their back.
