During the course of travels, so many unforeseen things can occur from ending up with a cancelled reservation/booking, overbooking, or just plain failure to accommodate passengers due to weather and/or technical faults with the equipment. How do you deal with these situations?

I take it in stride...if I'm at the airport and delayed...I give myself a tour of the place. Most airports are amazing pieces of architecture but we really never stop to see them since we're always in a rush.
I'm a very happy traveller I think. Usually Im a big explorer so I try to explore new things and areas etc. I mean like take this example of a cancelled flight, i'll pretty much explore every corner of airport and if its a domestic one, i'll be roaming outside airport to see around.
And I think i'm a big spender too so as that keeps things going somewhat satisfactorily.
grumpy traveler here too. hate delays. disrupts routines and habits, have to eat crappy airport food, hate having to drag carry-on luggage to bathrooms, get grumpier and grumpier as people crowd and block walkways, dont leave room to pass on escalators, occupy extra seats with their luggage.. the only plus side i can think of is it forces me to read a book or two.
1) DO NOT TAKE AWAY PAYPHONES AWAY FROM AIRPORTS. Seriously. I had no cash on me to put into the payphone (currency problems etc. I don't normally carry too much cash except petty cash, and that was spent on food. £5 at Heathrow doesn't get you too much), and my cell phone's battery had died + I didn't have credit on my phone either. I had to call collect call to my parents to let them know what's happening. Otherwise they would have had no idea what's going on. I don't care that everyone has a laptop, a cell phone, Google Glass, a chip in their brains, whatever. Things can go wrong. But a payphone is forever
2) Buy food in advance. Seriously, if I had decided to buy water later in the night, I'd be screwed. All shops were closed. No one wanted to go farther away from the screen either.
3) Explore the airport if you have time. That way you will know where everything is located and can plan a strategy.
4) Check if the flight is leaving on time before leaving the house. Will save from potential headaches.

That's awesome. Do you allow for extra time in case of situations like this? Or just come mentally prepared?

No I think I try to quickly adapt as per the situation and try not to be negative as it can only make it tougher. Compromising with it in your own way makes things passby easier :)
^ on the other hand, if you and your fellow traveler both become negative, outcome is positive. Of course need to adjust for odd number of fellow travelers.
