I try to be good person and trying to follow the religion helps in that direction too.

i understand the OP's question as " do you do good because your religion tells you, or because its in your heart "
good is good aslong as it benefits someone positively, but if the do-gooder is merit-making than i believe it has everything to do with intention
like me donating money to charity and advertizing my donation to my whole circle of friends in the name of good, is egotistically driven, but as some good will come of it, it is good, but not truely altrueistic
i believe in karma, and i believe that altruism is one of the most noble endevaurs, such as the people going doing to wartorn countries acting as human shields, thats one of the most beautiful things ic an think of :)
