ARE WE TRULY AWARE OF WHAT OUR CHILDREN ARE DOING?

Or the question unlikely to occur because we are too confident that our kids are perfect kids because they are reared in a Muslim family? May it be at your home, schools, their friends house or the library, we can never be too sure of our children’s safety. Our children lives in a troubled world.
Facing peer pressure plus the inability to practice Islam without being mocked by non Muslim kids , how safe against any sort of danger can our young ones be? Everything seems to be handed in a silver platter.

Drugs, cigarettes, beer and liquor, nasty magazines, you name it. Our kids are able to access these haram stuff. Will store owners care? They want your money and help sell your kid’s soul to the devil. It is everywhere. It is in your @computer.com. At times you begin to wonder why your son’s and
daughter’s suddenly become interested in going to the library to do their homework.Think again. Certain enough, they have made cyberfriends. Are they Muslims? Allahu Alem. The astounding part and little do we know they are into pornography and dirty chat rooms. Are there legal prohibition to view such material in the library? No.

Do we know really what our children are doing? Should we follow them around ? No! but rather it would be best to face the situation with courage and confidence. Encourage them to read Qur’an , of course with our participation and patience to teach . Narrate to them the inspiring examples of the life of Prophet Muhammad (saaw ).Raise them the best Muslim kids as
you can. Teach them the simplicity of Islam , the pillars and inform them how we are all accountable for the good and the bad we do in this life.Let us encourage them to read about the the lives of the great men of
Islam, narrate to them stories of the pious people. What prompt the two boys in the Colorodo high school killings? Children
killing children for no senseless reason. The computer has taken and corrupted the mind of one of the boys. A clear warning message that is left neglected by irresponsible, less concerning citizens. May Allah protect our children from such harm. Ameen.

Allah, the exalted has said:
‘And enjoin upon thy people worship, and be constant therein.’ (20:132)

‘O ye who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a fire where of the fuel is men and stones’ (66;6)

‘Friends on that day will be foes one to another, save those who kept their duty(to ALLAH).’(43;67)

SOME TIPS for you to help your children explore the Internet safely.

  1. GUARD THEIR MINDS, THEN THE COMPUTER(Keep Allah in their minds and hearts always)

  2. USE FILTERWARE(filterware is also called filtering oftware, cencorware, parental control software or blocking software gives
parents technical tools to block Internet content that could be harmful to children)

  3. SELECT A FAMILY FRIENDLY INTERNET PROVIDER PREFERRABLY MUSLIM OWNED.(some ISPs are concerned with with the issue of parenting online. They offer guidelines for parents, provide clear help in setting up parental control features, provide kids-only areas, block child ponography from their
newsgroup servers, help find interesting kid sites on the Internet and respond quickly to reports of online abuse).

  4. KEEP THE COMPUTER IN THE OPEN (You can strengthen your safety net simply by locating the computer in a common room, such as the family room, instead of the bedroom. Many parents have peaked into their child’s room in the middle of the night to discover their children surfing the night away).

  5. ADVISE YOUR CHILDREN NOT TO REVEAL ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ONLINE (Your children should never give out a telephone number, address, school name, photo or full name in E-mail,chat or newsgroups.Have them create screen names completely distinct from their real names).

  6. NEVER MEET A CYBERSPACE FRIENDS WITHOUT PARENT’S AROUND OR THEIR APPROVAL. People often use anonymity of the Internet to pose as someone else.It is easy to believe what they say online.Train your children to STOP
immediatly if they see or read anything that upsets them).

  7. LIMIT THE TIME SPENT ONLINE(Time limits keep your children from spending too much online and from accessing the Internet at inappropriate times, such as when they should be sleeping or studying).

children. It can work havoc in the lives of adults for all the reasons discussed. In addition ,at least two other potential pitfalls await the net-cruising grownup
