Are we slave of our taste buds

I am not the world’s most fit person but I do care about my general health. I feel angry at the people who don’t give a damn to their health.

I know of a person (late hubby of my mom’s friend) who had high sugar. Doctors strongly asked him not to eat sweet stuff. His wife used to keep an eye on him but he used to sneak his way into kitchen to steal some gajar ka halwa or laddoo or Gulab Jamun Now the uncle is gone for long, died because of complications, and his wife lives with a son (in his early twenties) and a divorced daughter in a motel because they had to move out of their apartment which was not in a good neighborhood.

Another example is my own cousin (who was as old as my mom). That guy had major heart issues and high cholesterol. Doctor asked him to stay away from fatty food but he had to have his paratha breakfast every morning. He obviously died of major heart attack.

A famous writer from Pakistan once wrote (and I paraphrase) .. ‘some of us dig our grave with our own teeth’ (meaning die because we could not control our eating habits).

Is it only common amongst desis that they are slave of their taste buds or is it a world wide mindset?

Re: Are we slave of the taste buds

It’s worldwide, but it depends on how much of that devilicious food we eat though

the french eat cheese and bread but they relax, savor it, and eat it in small portions right? even sweets and chocolate, a little everyday does no harm

fast food restaurants are everywhere nowadays, that food tastes great as oily as it is, i stay the farthest away from it. some people just don’t have that all important** self control** which is key in not being slaves to our taste buds

who can resist chocolate? wish all these foods made by the devil didn’t exist so i wouldn’t have to do all kinds of crazy stuff to avoid it, tricks with my mind…:grumpy:

Re: Are we slave of the taste buds

I understand that we all love to eat tasty food but if your doctor tells you that unless you eliminate your soidum intake, you wont live for more than 6 months ... would you still eat your pakoras and namak paaray?

Re: Are we slave of the taste buds

i don't know how i will be at that age...........ugh

it must be hardest for diabetics to stay away from sweets during the holidays :( but i agree that they should be extra strong b/c they have kids and family that depend on them.

Re: Are we slave of the taste buds

at what age? our eating habits from younger days are the ones that kill us at the older age.

Re: Are we slave of our taste buds

I and hubby are not slaves to our taste buds, alhamdulillah..... I wouldn't touch a type of food if my doctor told me to stay away from it or I would die.

And yes, I do indulge in baked goods or fast foods sometimes, but can avoid them altogether if needed. The obesity I see around me sickens me (its not limited to desis only), how can people love food so much that they sacrifice their general health like this...... its mind-boggling.

Re: Are we slave of our taste buds

I would hate to be not told to eat from outside much but if it needs to be done then it needs to be done :(

Re: Are we slave of our taste buds

TLK this is a topic near and dear to my heart. My day is absolutely FILLED with people who can not seem to stay away from destructive eating habits.
I almost feel as if they have turned a deaf ear to the docs warning ... "yea yea ... all docs say that" add to that the ever present excuse of "maut zindagi tau allah ke haath mein hai" and you have yourself the license to kill yourself and you know what .... they do.

oh yea this cross ethnic, religious, socioeconomic boundaries ....

Re: Are we slave of our taste buds

This is such an irritating justification that people give, only to justify eating food.

Re: Are we slave of our taste buds

I agree, food is an addiction imo. The phrase 'those help themselves God helps them' comes to mind
