conditioned to believe in a god.

ancient people didn’t have a way to explain our existence or the cosmos.

So they thought whatever happened in the "heavens"was directly connected to what happened in their lives. (Reason we have astrology and horoscopes)

They had no real scientific method and what we now consider superstition, absurd, and laughable was their “science”

It may very well be possible. sometimes i feel that too, not only about god but about devil as well.

without going in much details i will say what one of the wise man used to tell me when i was a kid, that we created god, we wrote books and we created the religions. without us there would be no religion or god or any book.

well, we have laws and theories and observances that explain some of the stuff. and the concept of a god is no longer a part of it.

not sure about dependency of devil on the god. in my religion there is no concept of devil so i never had opportunity to grasp the concept as much as you do about him/her.
for me god is all that is good in the world and god is what all that is bad in the world. basically god is responsible for bad and good both.

BTW i never said there is no god.

there are still several things/phenomenons that cannot be described by scientific laws. Emotions, for one. How do you explain that?

my personal take is that at all times, mankind has lumped whatever he didnt understand and hence been in awe/fear into a god, thus creating hope out of it all.

what we didn't understand about our world has changed over the millenia, and so has god/gods.

Coming back to your point if you see the commonalities in the ancient cultures who came in existence not knowing about each other, they all have same basic things.
every one believed in concept on good and bad( which is pretty consistant), dark and light, higher and lower, god and devil, etc etc.. so it may be just human programming.
we may have created god or god may have created us, i like to believe in the former :)
