A student won first prize at one of the college when he was attempting to
show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk
science and spreading fear of everything in our environment.
In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding
strict control or total elimination of the chemical “dihydrogen
monoxide.” And for plenty of good reasons, since it can:
Cause excessive sweating and vomiting
It is a major component in acid rain
It can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
Accidental inhalation can kill you
It contributes to erosion
It decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
It has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.
Forty-three said yes, six were undecided, and only one knew that
the chemical was water.
i wouldve said that too.. i mean in favor of banning this chemical..i've heard h2O as water.but not dihydrogen monooxide..although if u c its the same thing! Human r gullible..dont know a lot of basic stuff!
deedawar do u have a link, as 5-6 years ago those two dudes on tv did the same thing, and they fool alot of people, so this dude was merely copying them i guess.
**zainab **dihydrogen monoxide is different having a different structure bur chemicallyy reacts somewat similar .
deedawar i always wondered that being gullible and making others gullible
will end up the life circle one day . but then god has created soo many creatures .
What a dumb way to argue that humans are gullible. What a frickin' dumb way. First of all, I recognize this joke from about five years ago. Secondly, it's not a question of gullibility, it's one of deception. You can't state that it's "dihydrogen monoxide" and expect the regular Joe to understand that type of scientific terminology. When you're conforting people about these issues, you've got to be honest. You got to tell people the facts, or use a simpler word if there is one. By the way, that list is also deceptive. If you're just focusing on the negative, of course people will have a negative response!
It's kind of like if I told you of a disease in latin words or another language and you freaked out only to discover that I was talking about the common cold. Or like I told you of all the bad things that could happen to you while breathing and you tried to go to Congress to ban breathing.
secondly, I know reading threads in S&P can get emotional at times, but please refrain from attacking the poster/post instead of replying to it (e.g. the usage of the word 'dumb')
thirdly, the examples you are giving about what will be the reaction if you give jargon to the layman, is exactly the point deedawar is trying to make ;--)
