Are we as people, or Pakistanis and Muslims, environmentally conscientious?

Those of us who have not seen the helplessness of being without adequate clean water supply, sanitation system, organic uncontaminated fields and orchards of crops, fruits & vegetables, do not know (& perhaps cannot even view) how serious the problem is of degeneration of human health on a population scale, when it comes to being insensitive towards the land and its produce.

In our country, we have very little of this work being done.

It is a shame that we look around for example of good works, and practices in conserving our resources, way after we realized somehow that the damage is irreparable, at some point. i think, we should be different. since, consumerism is not the norm, relative to the less industrialized world, and the quick access to unlimited resources is not that easy, we can benefit from intelligent and efficient ways of holding the resources and distributing them wisely among all.

Some on the reminders:

  • Each tap that is left run while we brush our teeth wastes gallons of water. taht water could be saved or used by someone else more needy of it
  • The peel of the fruits and the vegetables in a systematic manner, can be used efficiently as natural fertilizers
  • Less waste of consumable food can be ensured by preparing less & eating healthy
  • People can teach their children to not waste their health by eating factory made food or by destroying the environment through pollution
  • Installing solar panels in the houses for energy
  • Using natural gas instead of electricity
  • Buying furniture that is made of wood-like materials but not actual dead wood – a killed tree
  • Habits such as turning off lights and air conditioning when no one is home
  • Creating better systems of distributing food and replenishing what is taken from the earth, by sowing more plants and trees; for each person, on the planet if a tree is sowed, when that person is born, how nice would it be
  • doing it consistently and not becoming lazy or uncaring about this..
Epidemiological studies related to public health and population based consumption as well as urban studies indicate that we need to be taking on the responsibility of doing our part in treating our planet with love and care - i.e. not destroying its ability to nourish us. Remember the food chain – granted that no one eats us today, as it used to be in the hunter gatherer times when bigger animals could eat up humans, still it almost seems like we are eating away at our own selves, by suffocating our air and land

How important it is for responsible individuals, corporations, policy makers, businesses, citizens and families to recognize this, is beyond description.
