I know silly question, but what language are the courses taught in? English? If so, then how do the urdu medium kids cope?
Re: Are universities/colleges in Pakistan taught in Urdu or English?
depends on the college. I attended Govt. College of Commerce and Eco. Karachi and all courses were taught in English except URDU and Islamic Studies. You can choose to take the final exam in Urdu or English regardless of which college you attended. Most Urdu medium students don’t apply at the colleges where English is the language of preference. There are no restrictions however.

Well there is now WAFAQI URDU UNIVERSITY. The whole course is in Urdu.
I know switching from urdu to english is quite difficult and students have to work extra hard to cope with the difference. And all of the universities were in English, till this one opened. I think its a big change and opens new opportunities for urdu medium students.

The better ones teach in English
Re: Are universities/colleges in Pakistan taught in Urdu or English?
there is no question of better or worse.
There were no URDU universities in pakistan, until this one opened i guess, three years ago.
There are, however, urdu medium schools.
Re: Are universities/colleges in Pakistan taught in Urdu or English?
With English being the official language i hope that people can understand the need to be able to comprehend and communicate in English. Even in the most basic govt offices all memos and stuff are in English. So from a future of a job command of the language will definitely be essential.
Re: Are universities/colleges in Pakistan taught in Urdu or English?
there are two mediums up to HSSC, higher secondary school certificate, High school for the painDu ABCDs. After that it is all English. Muqtadra urdu zaban did a lot of work in translating science books in Urdu and as a result Urdu University came into being. Jameel uddin Aali holds a high position at UU, i am not sure what exactly.
In urdu medium schools English is only taught as a subject after grade five. I did read somewhere that government was trying to introduce English as a subject from grade one, not sure if that happened.
I had a class fellow who came to our school in first year after doing his matric in Urdu medium. He had topped fedral board in Matric and one day told me how difficult it was for him to study everything in English now. The bugger still topped in HSC and the last I heard he was studying at KE.
