Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

I remember in Zia’s time Tues and Wed being official “meatless days”. Is that still official policy or not?

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

Never heard of that. :S

I hate veggies so I don't think I've ever had a meatless day here.

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

IT was not just in Zia's days. It was as long as I could remember, all the way from Bhutto to BB's days in 1990 when I came to USA, Tues/Wed were meatless days (no mutton and beef, though you could buy fish and chicken)

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

But why?

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

to secure the supply of live stock.

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

No no no. It’s not to save the meat. It has been there for more than a hundred years, since Ranjeet Sigh ( I am not 100% sure about the person’s name).

The story behind it is: Ranjeet Singh surrounded Lahore to punish Lahoris for something. He demanded the rulers of Lahore to hand over all the butchers as a punishment, with their ears and noses cut. The butchers were handed over to him in this state. The butchers, after the incident, started observing two days in a week as a protest day and it continued till sometime back. I remember the two days off were always called ‘hartaal’ of butchers and not a holiday.

I only remember this much from an article in a newspaper I read years ago.

There are some vague details on these pages:

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

sounds pretty strange but who am I to argue. I dont know any better

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

So why butchers still work on selling chickens?

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

hmm that's quite interesting. In fact the livestock supply reason sounds a bit strange too, wouldn't people just buy more on the other days thus ensuring consumption stayed the same?

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

Maybe they just need a break from hard work. Can't take Friday/Sat/Sun off for daawatein so Tue/Wed makes sense.

Bijli Ka Bill Bhi Tuo Bharna Hota Hai Us Din. Biwi Ko bahar Bhi Lae Jaana Hai, Motor cycle Pe.

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

yes that is true, but restaurants were also not serving meat on those days and because restaurants would not store 2 days worth of meat and them being the bigger buyers than a regular consumers, the supply reason did matter.

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

That could be too, as Barbers used to have Mondays off in pakistan (I dont know if that is still the case), but 2 days off would not be a justified break for a business.

Re: Are there still meatless days in Pakistan?

**may be the superstition card played the trick. some Hindus do NOT travel on a Wednesday...Muslims of Lahore may have kept the tradition without questioning it's merits.

in India, no butcher will slaughter a pigeon even if u pay a million dollar a piece. unkii Khaam Khayaali hai k kabootar par 'shai' hotii hai...ya'nii, unke jism meN jin ke hone kaa Khatra laaHiq hotaa hai. kia jihaalat hai! maiN ne hazaaroN kabootar kaaTe, mujh par to koi jin na aayaa palaT ke...aise tavahhumaat pe la'nat hai...astaGhfaar!!!**
