Are there any actors who got in the long lines at the auditions, started with the smaller roles, and then worked up to the lead roles?

Seems like every other actor is a son or daughter of another popular actor, and their first role is a lead actor in a big Bollywood movie.

If not this, then they are some big industrialists’ son or daughter, and that just guarantees their career in Bollywood.

Or maybe my impression of how Bollywood really works is wrong, and that is how it works, much like every other industry.

If they aren't offspring of the Bollywood elite they're pretty much always ex beauty queens or models (which tho of course is much like female Hollywood stars)

Females: Ash, Sushmita Sen, Priyanka Chopra, Diya Mirza, Celina Jaitley, Bipasha Basu, Ayesha Takia, Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif, Shilpa Shetty, Frieda Pinto (hmmm dunno if she counts as Bollywood)..

I don't think Sneha Ullal (Ash lookalike) was a model tho..

Males: John Abraham and Dino Morea were models, much more of the Bollywood men compared to the women seem to come from famous families..

Priety Zinta, Kay Kay Menon, Irfan Khan, Raveena Tandon, Mumtaz Ruslan, Kangana etc are non ex-models or any star kids.

shahrukh khan and amir khan are non-star kids, look at where they at now.

Ruslan Mumtaz is the son of Marathi film actress Anjana Mumtaz (who starred as Dada Kondke's heroine)

Raveena Tandon is daughter of Lekh Tandon film producer

Madhuri Dixit came from a total Non Film background. So did Aishwarya Rai, Sonali Kulkarni, Sonali Bendre, Smita Patil, Nana Patekar

It doesn't except ppl tend to prefer seeing beautiful people on screen - apparently. Shilpa was also a model.

Says on Mallika's Wikipedia page she was a small-time model before she became a Bollywood starlet.

I know Katrina has often been described as having been a 'top model' in London before she moved to India but have to admit I find that hard to believe, I'd never seen her in any UK magazines or ad campaigns and she really doesn't have the right sort of look (chiselled/good bone structure, small nose, by model standards not slim enough). She may have done a lot of desi modelling but I can't imagine her doing much top level western style work cos doesn't have the sort of features top model agencies in the UK tend to like.
