i have two laptops and they both have died on me…they both won’t turn on…i will be going to pak soon so i was wondering whether i should take them with me to pak…i rather not just throw them away…my cousins could use them if they get them to work..so do you know if anyone in karachi can fix these kind of issues?
and where can i take them in karachi?
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
yeah take them with you.. even if you have something repaired then it will be cheaper there than anywhere else..
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
If prices are like in India, make sure no major part needs to be procured there in Pakistan. You don't want your cousins to be spending an undue amount of money in getting old laptops running so as not to hurt your feelings
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
It may even cost more. It's hard enought o get parts for laptops from unofficial sources in UK. ie IBM, TOSH,Sony want sell parts to anyone only their repair centres. I would imagine in Pakistan even harder and more pricey to get parts. However if it's a standard compnent such as PSU caps blown or fan not workking should be cheap enough.
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
Anything you need, they can supply ya in Pakistan. Hey if they can repair Harddrive’s without any theoritical backgrounds, Im sure they won’t have any problems with repairing you laptop. Unless it is beyond repair offcourse, even by the manafacturer’s standards.
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
a big difference in precision low tolerence equipmet like a HD than a bicycle. Yes they maybe able to get a HD working but withought a proper understanding of what is involved it may not last very long and sucess rate will be very low especially where replacing heads. I adout it most places have a clean room.
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
Recycle the laptop in states and have a safe trip to Hometown
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
WHO says we dont have qualified people in pak ?? Specially karachi me u can get ur laptop repaired cheap ... there are places that can get u done with proper equipment ... laptopcity ( Park Towers ) and Laptech ( Uni Center ) to name a few :)
as for the hard drives ... the success rate is good enuff :p when they can repair my DEAD 256 MB Kingston memory Stick ... and it works a 12 hour per day routine perfectly ... these paki people can do anything :)
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
umm.. yeah flash storage is very simillar to a HD.
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
correct!
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
I was able to get my external HDD (USB2.0 + FW) enclosure (Creative Storage Blaster) fixed in Pakistan as well. It was returned back to me by Creative indicating that it was beyond repairs. It is working fine now.
I have seen people replace the BIOS-EPROMs on multiple layered motherboards.
As far as procurement of replacement parts for laptops is concerned, you might just get lucky. There are plenty of people who import dead, damaged and obsolete laptops, salvage good parts out of them and then repair the bad ones.
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
no offence dude but replacing a bios is piss easy regardless of number of layers. Most places in the west wont bother repairing cheap items as labour is expensive if if it's not a big task they would rather sell you a new one.
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
No offense taken. Well! In that respect, nothing is difficult in this world once you know about it. I do not agree with you that replacing BIOS is pi$$ easy. I was not talking about the socketted BIOS on the motherboards but rather about the BIOS soldered on the motherboards.
Re: are the computer techs in pak any good?
I do some repairs myself and taking of a solderd bios chip is piss easy. It can even be done withought a rework station, a good iron and solder. The hardest job on a motherbaord you will come across is replacing a FPGA chip i.e. north/south bridge which needs equipemnt worth a few £K namely a relibale hot air station and x-ray machine to get an image of solder balls to see if flow has occured correctly. Apart from that replacing anything is piss easy even those TSOP chips mose people wont touch can be taken off and on with just an iron. Multilayer doesnt cause a problem in mothebraords as internal connections are usually just for power delivery and external for routing. Even if it was a 6 layer or more PCB as we wont be doing any signal probing it doesnt make a difference as all componets on the outisde.

I respect your opinion, but as I said nothing is difficult in this world once you know about it. Thanks for the informative links.
