Topic :
Shia: Are Shia Muslims?
Question:
Are the shaati Muslims? I know they belive in 12 Imams who will come in the future and save them. As a SUnni Muslim, I beleive that Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is the last one. Will you please explain this to me. Thanks. I bid you peace, Aladdin
Answer:
Br. Aladdin: Assalamu Alikum wa Rahmatu Allah.. I think you meant asking about Shia’ts not ‘‘Shaati’’. Shia’ts are Muslims because by they meet the definition for a Muslim when they believe and testify that: ‘’ There no god except Allah (S.W.T.), and Muhammad (S)is His final Messenger.‘’ They also practice Salat, Zakat, Fasting and Hajj. As to believing in 12 Imams, not all Shia’ts do, but those who you are referring to they don’t believe that the 12 Imams are going to come in the future to save them. The 12 Imams lived long time ago in the very early centuries of Islam. Shia’ts give the 12 Imams extra respect and regard, Sunnies do too!, but whoever goes to extreme in regard to the Imams to place them above the Prophets, we know that it is not good. There are clear differences between Shia’ts and Sunnies, but the differences are in the secondary issues not the basic beliefs. I hope this will answer your question. Thank you for asking, ..Assalamu Alikum.

Who said shias were not Muslims?

As the post said, we SHOULD NOT go to the extreme with our praises for our Imaams. Mohammad is our leader and we should follow him NOT imaams.

In one hadith Prophet MOhammad Said:
"Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising the Son of Maryam (Eesaa) (alaihis-salaam), for verily I am only a slave, so say slave of Allaah and His Messenger " [Bukhari]

nationalism and sunni is arab nationalism

rvikz,
Little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

Yes shias are muslims. Can I ask my shia brothers if I dont believe in their 12 imams I would remain a muslim or not?

Allah (swt) knows best.

Hello,
I believe that a question such as the one posed on this thread is meant only to get the attention of its readers. Ofcourse Shias are Muslims, because if not then it would have been deemed so earlier. The differences between sects is not a matter of fundamental belief but rather a disparity in physical actions. My opinion, whatever it may be worth, is that since Muslims are united in their fundamental beliefs, the discussion on sect differences should be limited to questions meant for the purposes of "information", not discrediting or defaming a certain sect. Having read various posts, it is obvious that there is great sentiment, mostly from Sunni brothers and sisters, regarding Shia beliefs and this is expected as Shia beliefs include a more complicated history which does have discrepancies. However, the relevance of these minor details pales in comparison to the great similarities between different sects. So please, when asking question, do so in a positive manner so that there is more of a sense of understanding and respect for each other rather than animosity and resentment.
Thank You
Moe
