:cb: I agree. I used to love meethi chaliyaa when I was little but I can’t stand them now … I don’t like paan at all.

Finally! Someone else who doesn;t like paan. The nettle leaves are healthy but chalia and choona stuff are bad :nono:

btw it depends wht kinda pan those are. If it was a meetha pan without the chemicals they put in it, then it isnt harmful. The only one that aren't good for health are the ones with nuswaar (not sure wht that is)

I never had paan in my life. Don’t understand the idea of taking such a big niwala, that too of a leaf, full of weird stuff and then start chewing for the next … 10-20 minutes. oh not to mention u have to spit that red stuff, right, they don’t swollow it?

Do you know it’s like the “Soghaat” of Karachi, like a delicacy! A must in every house, and a must tiny steel suitcase kinda thingy whenever they travel.

Once all my cousins ordered paan in liberty. They insisted me to take too saying the place sold the best paans. Just eating little bit of it, my breathing became very hard. With tears in my eyes, my chest felt very heavy like it was being cut with a knife. I spewed out the damn thing and tried to drink water but it was so painful to even take water as if there was a brick inside my chest (It was also a meetha paan).

Everyone thought maybe those were chaaliyas or ‘choona’ inside paan. My brother brought for me some few weeks ago and said he ordered ‘special’ paans for me. I asked what was so special he said it just contained ‘meethi chaaliya’ and ‘gulqand’ and nothing else. I was reluctant to eat it so tried very tiny piece of it but it tasted great and I was okay. So basically, it wasnt the ‘leaf’ of the paan as I had thought before but some of the other ingredients probably. You can choose what you like to have in your paan. But still eating them like… for lunch and dinner??? I am not sure.

no its not. the steel thing is called a pandaan which a lot of muhajirs especially elderly walay have. and yes karachi walay eat a lot of paan :confused:

its not so bad… once every year or so. tho i dont chew for ages, i eat it in one go

Oh no, it was a normal ‘meetha paan’. Someone said it was chaaliya which caused that and others said it must be ‘khushbu’ or ‘choona’. Oh they could not have made me eat tambaakoo wala without my knowledge cz ammi of one of the cousins was with us and she would have complained about them :hehe:

myth? Well, I have seen so many Karachiite aunties and uncles with red teeth (colored by eating paan all the time) and in every Urdu speaking house, there's a Paan-daan and there is no fix time for it. everyone eats it all the time.

What is chalia and choona? Are those things in the sweet paan? I like the taste of meetha paan not the one with the tobacco in it.

BKB I was born in karachi so I am half karachi wali and this lady who lived in an appartment across from us used to give me meetha paan…i guess thats where i got it from :o

ohh i see.....yeah u r right, on my recent trip to karachi after 5 yrs. i noticed that karachi wale do eat paan, chaliya and other stuff alot and drink tea like crazy.
