Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

:salam2:

If you posted a suicide note to your friends on an online social networking site, would anyone reach out to help? Are online friends “real” friends?

“I’m ending my life will be dead soon bye bye everyone.”

That was the final posting of a 42 year-old woman in England who committed suicide. Sadly, the message to her 1,048 Facebook friends went largely ignored, according to an article_in_USA_Today.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

Well obviously if you have 1000 friends on facebook they won't care, most of these would be people you wouldn't even say hi to.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

I read about this and and you could see the whole converstaion, quite a few people said 'is anyone going to call the police' but these were people she had only met through facebook, lived in another country and did not know where she lived. The friends who knew her well were just having some all out catfight and pretty much ignored the pleas of other firends to call the police. From what I remember the girl had threatend suicide a number of times hence was not taken seriously this time. Sad situation really.

edit: If I put that message on facebook, someone would call the police and my parents straight away, mainly because I only have facebook friends I have met in person and know very well. I only have real friends on facebook, not facebook friends.

They can be.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

online friendships can only mean something if you know them in the nonvirtual world too. I think i put way too much importance on the word friend so all that friendlist stuff doesn't mean anything to me unless i'll be able to have a long lasting nonvirtual friendship with them as well.

getting emotionally attached to online friends can lead to heartbreak cuz sometimes some just close their accounts or don't ever log on. not really very dependable.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

Maybe there are few friends out of 1000+ who knw her and could help her when she was in need. But ending of social gathering online never been pleasent.

I guess its really really difficiult to trust somebody on online as well as make real friendship.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

That woman was crazy (as in mentally unstable)....

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

Aj kal jo apne samne ho yaan saath ho wo nahie bante to jo online hain unho ne kia ban na hai :( :'( (crying)

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

Well friends online or in person are all tested and it's up to the individual how much you trust or depend on those friends.

Personally most of my online friends are good people in real life. Some guppies for example I have met one or two but then not yet met others who are known to both of us.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

There is No real answer to this question .. you cant say a full yes or a full no ..online is something virtual ..and virtual isnt real ..but the ppl on the other end are real ..so where do u draw the line at reality ..

for me .. its not a hit or a miss but maybe

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

Having 1000 Facebook-friends (for ex. your plumber or your cross the street grocery store guy) doesn't count as friends.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

^ Good point.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

no.

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

the question is how many among your 1000+ friends are really your friends or are in touch with you on daily basis?

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

I read somewhere "If u hav 1 friend thats enough, if u hav 2 friends thats too much and if u have 3 or more then there is no limit of problems".

I agree with FD and FBI! online friendships is like "Dekho ab camel kis karwat bhet-ta hy".

Re: Are Online Friendships Real Friendships?

Some of them are real to me as a real friend yes and some of them are more nicer, loyal and trustworthy than any people I've ever met.
