I’m a Malik and a couple days back, I and my cousin were having a discussion about the spread of Islam in the Subcontinent and I mentioned that Pakistanis have a strange way of somehow claiming Arab descent. I was like:
“Ye baat maan lo ke hamaray baap dada Hindu thay, koi Arab nai thay. Hmara koi taluk nai hai arbon se”
And he got angry and said that we Maliks are descended from Hazrat Ali R.A. Is he right? Personally, I think it’s just an example of the obsession of the Muslims of the subcontinent with Arab descent. And please, if you say that he is right and Maliks are indeed related to Hazrat Ali, give some evidence. And some hard evidence. Not something like Baba so-so and Baba so-so said this and that lol
There are no Hindu/Sikh Awans, only Muslim Awans, this also lends to the claim that they are indeed from Arab ancestry. My paternal grandmother used to say the same thing your cousin did.

Why are you asking that. In Islam there is no concept of superiority based on ethnicity, tribe, cast, etc. The only criteria that makes you superior in Allah's eyes is 'Taqwa'.

nothing wrong with researching your ancestry if this is the intention.

Agreed, if this is the only intention, but in our society such affiliations are normally used in Peeri-Mureedi chakar, which is against the basic teachings of Islam. Islam came to remove discriminations existing at that time like (Arab - Non Arab) and not for creating new one (Syed- Non Syed).

Very true. Let me tell you that I do not believe in divisions on basis of cast/ethnicity and therefore, do not have "Malik" attached to my name. It was at birth, but I deliberately didn't include it on the O-Level Entry statement and then used that entry statement to get my bay form. :)
