Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Are Indian news channels like CNN-IBM, Aaj-Tak watched and popular in Pakistan? or is it mainly films/serials based channels?

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

From what I've noticed, people seem to rely more on Pakistani private channels for their news. First, it gives them some local news. At least, in Karachi and some of the other larger cities. Indian news channels don't really provide that. Secondly, the Pakistani private news channels tend to give more information about corruption in the government, and other such mirch masala. More than what Indian channels could possibly accomplish, although, they try hard at it. Third, from what I understand some shows are pretty regularly watched and discussed in Pakistani households, as they sometimes bring in Islam, etc in a much more professional fashion than what Indian channels can provide.

It makes sense. I watch American news channels, because I live in the United States. I am not going to watch BBC to figure out what is happening in my own backyard.

Pakistanis do watch Indian channels for entertainment, but I think the following for private Pakistani entertainment channels has really blossomed over the past few years. I don't know if Indian channels are still found to be better anymore.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Thanks. The reason I asked, is because Indian news channels give lot of coverage to news events in Pakistan , Bangladesh etc. Also I figured Al Jazeera is popular in Pakistan.

Manytimes you get a different point of view from hearing news from different sources.

What do you think of Indian newschannels with respect to Pakistan news. Are they biased/unbiased? I am not talking about Doordarshan but private Indian news channels.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

I had watched them some time ago before there were Private Pakistani news channels. At that time, pakistanis were watching them to some extent, but even then they understood the news would be biased. I think at that time, there was more reliance on BBC and such channels. I don't know about Al-Jazeera. I don't know anyone that watches it. Keep in mind, I'm just basing my opinions on what people I know have told me.

I think Indian news channels are definitely biased, from what I've seen of them.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Aaj-Tak Is totally anti-Pakistan.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

I think Aaj-Tak is owned by India Today magazine.

How about CNN-IBM, Sahara Samay, http://www.starmajha.com/, 24 Ghante etc.

I think PTV news are popular in India.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Pakistani's don't care about what goes on in India.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

^ Yeah rite!

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Well, some people do love to keep up with their bollywood, right LUC?

I nearly choked while reading that PTV news is popular in India. Is it because they think its as funny as Pakistanis do?

Surely, there is better Pakistani journalism out there.

Last I heard, these private pakistani channels were banned anyway. Has that ban been uplifted?

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

No private Pakistani channel is watched in India. Only channel available is PTV , so there is no choice.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

n PTV new...yikes....dude even i dont prefer to watch it. (english version is good though)

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Oh I'm truly humbled.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Aside from Bollywood, Pakistanis don't give two sh*ts about India's political situation

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

I dunno about others, but elite Pakistanis [who actually matter] prefer Hollywood... when I was growing up in Islamabad it was almost a TABOO to watch Bollywood films -- you'd be considered "too cheap" if you watched them. It still that way in the top instituitions in Islamabad/Karachi [like KGS]. As far as Indian news channels are concerned, they first need to learn Urdu but even then no one would watch coz they have a reputation of being very biased and are known to kowtow to the Indian government stance vis a vis Pakistan.

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

Really? That's very interesting. Then how are channels like ARY getting calls from India on their music shows? I remember some lady recently called into either the Nadia or Marina Khan show?

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

^^ Says a lot about "indian demo ratsy" though..

Re: Are Indian newschannels popular in Pakistan?

I think he mean on "antenna". I know GEO and ARY are available in India on CABLE.
