Overrated. And gosh what if hte guy cant afford ANY type of ring? is he not worthy of marrying then? :)
It definitely is overrated. Wanting a big sparkly rock does reflect the materialistic North American culture. But I guess most girls always dream of a big rock on their fingers and it's hard to give up that dream! haha
I'm not sure why girls getting excited about a ring reflects materialism any more than girls getting excited about gold sets, suits, etc. Every culture has an idea of a girl being given something valuable as part of the marriage, whether by the groom, his family, or her family---and I think that we're all gems worth some sort of lasting gift as a celebration of the match! Of course regardless of our culture we should be aware of our fiance's means and manage our expectations accordingly.
In our case my future MIL keeps pressuring my fiance to get me some gold, and I keep trying to explain to her that it's not important to me and I'd rather we save the money for a house. She doesn't understand that I bride isn't interested in gold. But I prefer the look of an engagement ring and I'm really happy to have something I will wear every day for the rest of my life that makes me think of him!

Hey hey, dont get me wrong--not saying our culture (desi) is any less materialistic. That big rock is the equivalent of girls in pakistan who dream of the gold ;)

I don't know about if they r catching up but i still want one cuz i hate yellow gold and can't stand it. I prefer white gold and diamonds and my mom has a few diamond rings of her own so i think they r catching upon the older generation as well.
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
NYC_gori, the Paradiso setting is gorgeous!! :)
:) Thank you, groovychick! I'm so happy with it. I gotta give my fiance some BIG credit for finding it on his own---I actually know very little about rings so he did all the homework and discovered it and chose it without any help from me!

Yeah you're right! I shouldn't have confined it to North America. my bad!
But to clarify I wasn't implying that people who spend a lot on engagement rings or gold are 'wasting money'. Hey, if you are able to afford it, then by all means splurge! To each his own.

thumbs up to productive fiances! yay! :)
The trend has always been there....it just was not as widespread as it is now...
my grandfather brought a solitaire diamond ring (1.5 carat) from Bombay..for my grandmother in 1946....my phupho has the ring, and it is probably the bling-iest diamond i have ever set my eyes on...been to harry winston..cartier..etc..but i have fallen in love with that particular one...
mom has a diamond ring....which belonged to her great-nani jan, again..the diamond was purchased from Bombay. You can get tons of precious stones from North pak/india..for example, I have a ruby ring..the ruby was purchased from kashmir (india) and I had it set by my jeweler....
currently i am looking for a sapphire...for my ring..do check Christie's in NY or London for some awesome estate rings!! you can find some great deals..
The rings sound brilliant! What are their respective settings like; ornate and traditional or very antique and intricate patterns???????
As for Christies, always thought that was for the uber-rich..nice to know that us normal ppl can go there too....will give it a try:)
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
Inmho I think this ring thing is mostly a western thing that Pakis have caught onto. The thing is, as long as you get a ring that looks nice be happy. Who cares if someones is bigger or shines more? My husband actually told me not to get him a ring because he said it wasn't necessary as it is not Islamically important. I wanted to so badly get him one but hey, it saved my Mom tons of money and my hubby knew we couldn't afford the best of everything. As for my ring, I didn't get it till after the wedding! There was no way my hubs could come to my area to go ring shopping at the time. My Mom told him we could buy the ring and he could pay later but he insisted on being there with me when getting the ring. Honestly, I got a semi precious ruby which looks gorgeous and I get complimented on it all the time and guess what..it cost less than a traditional ring but is still gorgeous. The thing is, I am simple to begin with and don't care for "real jewels" as I believe if it is fake and looks almost or as good as the real then whats the problem. My hubby insisted I get a semi precious meaning it was still almost as good as the real thing although if my ring was still of quality but not real at all, just completely fake I would have still been happy. After all, I got the biggest jewel of all, my hubby!:D

P.S.-I still hope you get a nice and gorgeous ring to your liking I'A without breaking the bank!
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
I just finished desigining my diamond ring last month and am getting engaged next week i still havent seen the final piece yet bc my fiance doesnt want me to see it before the day of the eng. im so impatient to see it just a peek would be nice!! =)
I think getting a diamond ring is a personal choice im really not a jewelry person but always wanted a nice diamond ring and had the privilege to get exactly wut i want within the set budget i set for it. My fiance was generous enough to leave the budget up to me for me to decide and i didnt want to go overboad but all went well and will post pix of everything inshallah after its over!!
From experience after desigining the ring here's wut ive learned....dont go for the biggest diamond...thts the misconception everyone has tht the bigger the better...i got a fairly meidum size diamond more toward the bigger side but not so large...the thing with diamond rings is tht u can always change ur diamond even if its after 10-20 years and even then u only have to pay the difference between the new and old diamond
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
^you will probably not get the price u paid back, specially not if u bought a stone from a retailer because of the high markups. Also, diamond prices have come down nearly 30% since last yr, including inflation, even 10-20 yrs from now the only way you can even price match is if the store u bought it from has a policy of exchanging ur stone at the price u bought it at. Then again, 20 yrs from now if they are selling a stone with the same specs, it will be significantly more pricey than what you paid for it because of inflation. Therefore, a bigger and better stone will be even pricier.
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
^ of course wut ure saying is true but i was saying u can alwasy upgrade the diamond even if its 20-50 yrs later just so everyone knows tht wutever u get now is not permanent and u dont have to break ur bank to get the biggest and the flasshiest diamond now bc u need more $ towards the beginning of ur marriage after a while even if u pay more to get a bigger diamond it probably wont affect u bc most likely by then ull have enough $ to afford a bigger diamond w/o having to worry about the budget...and no doubt the diamond set in the ring wont be worth the same compare to the time u originally purchase it but ure still gona get something which is better than nutting!
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
^yeh i agree, u can always get an upgrade
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
diamonds are forever......... :P
and they are a grls best friend!! ;)
Re: Are diamond engagement rings becoming popular among Pakistanis?
I agree with the point about not getting the biggest size possible, I think you should get what looks best on your hand. My fiance was keen to get me something around the 2 carat mark, but I convinced him that it would completley wrong on my hand as my fingers are so slender. In the end he settled for a 1 carat but also with diamonds on the side, and got a great clarity and colour so it really sparkles and I couldn't be happier with his final choice.
