Christianity in the North Eastern Hills of South Asia: Social Impact and Political Implications

Ferdaus A Quarishi North Eastern tip of the Indian Sub-continent is witnessing ethnic explosions eversince the British withdrawal. One after another, the Nagas, the Mizos, the Khasis, the Manipuris have risen up to press their separate identity … and now the Tripuris, the Ahoms and even the Chakmas have joined the Bandwagon. How could this happen? What are the reasons behind this sudden awakening? Is it a self driven process? Or, an inspired one, accentuated by external or alien forces? And on top of everything, how far this reculcitrance is the direct result of largescale conversion of the tribals to Christianity?
Ferdaus A. Quarishi, in his effort to understand the very nature of this tribal ethnicity attempts to trace the growth of Christianity in these hills and evaluates socio-political ramifications of this spectacular phenomenon.

He raises these questions without really answering them. But these are certainly valid questions that ‘need to be examined and answered carefully’ as the writer himself emphasizes.
This small volume could be a prelude to bigger explorations and should provoke serious thinking in any curious reader.
