This is a question for Pakistani forum members living in USA. Do you think that only caucasians are considered the mainstream americans and the rest are hyphenated americans or pseudo americans?
It is also evident from the american media because a white person is always identified as just “American” and not hyphenated american. But the media even refers to president Obama as an african-american.
Although i have noticed that with the election of Obama, blacks have gained some acceptance in mainstream america and it is evident in sports and entertainment.

I think you are confusing nationality with ethnicity vernaculars. African American is a word used to identify someone of a certain ethnicity...for white folks, it's the word Caucasion.
