1. Southern Arabs generally have low IQ.

2. Southern Arabs are intolerant bigots who created wahabism.

3. Pakistanis are not good camel jockies.

The most common lineage given is that they came with Muhammad Bin Qasim and settled initially in Lahore. The arabic word ‘ar-reyah’ meaning shepherd is given as the base for the caste’s today’s label, arain.

I, being an arain myself, can claim that we are the most lazy, laid back and unambitious of the people

Arains are a “lower caste” found mainly in Punjab. In Indian Punjab, they are known as Saini.

Castewise, they are considered to be “vegetable growers” and held in comtempt by the Jat zamindars.

Arain,Rain(the latter form prevails in the Jumna valley) is a term which has at least two distinct meanings:in the Sutlej valley and throughout the eastern plains the Arains form a true caste,but in all the rest of the two Provinces the term is applied to any market-gardener and is synonymous with Baghban,Mali,Maliar,and even Jat in the South West Punjab.We are now concerned with the Arains as a caste.

Almost to a man Muhammadans and strongly inclined to orthodoxy,the Arains claim to be immigrants from Uch and have some affinities with the Kambohs.On the other hand some of the Arain and Hindu Saini clan names are identical,and those not always merely names of other and dominant tribes.From Uch they migrated to sirsa and thence into the Punjab.

In Sirsa the Sutlej Arains meet those of the Ghaggar.The two do not intermarry,but the Arains of the Ghaggar valley say they were Rajputs living on the Panjnad near Multan who were ejected some four centuries ago by Saiyad Jalal-ul-din of Uch.The Sutlej Arains in Sirsa say that they are,like the Arains of Lahore and Montgomery,connected by origin with the Hindu Kambohs who have become Musalmans.He describes the Arains of the Ghaggar as the most advanced and civilized tribe in Sirsa district,even surpassing the Sikh Jats of Patiala;and he considers them at least equal in social status with the Jats,over whome they themselves claim superiority.The Arains of Ferozepore,Ludhiana,Ambala and Hissar also trace their origins from Uch or its neighbourhood,though the Hissar Arains are said to be merely Muhammadan Malis.

On the whole it would appear probable that the Arains originally came from the lower Indus and spread up the five rivers of the Punjab;and that at an early stage in their history a section of them moved up the Ghaggar,perhaps then a permanent river flowing into the Indus,and there gained for themselves a position of some importance.Their alleged connection with the Mallis is probably based only upon common occupation;but there does seem some reason to think that they may perhaps be akin to the Kambohs,though the difference must be more than one of religion only,as many of the Kambos are Musalman.

The Arains,apart from their orthodoxy,differ little in their customs and dress from the Muhammadans generally.In Multan they prefer the blue majhla or waistcoat to the white."

*Arain are known for their hard work and dedication and some amongst their community, claim to be of arab descent[10], doubtless based upon the demographic that nearly all Arain are, and have been, Sunni Muslim, as were the early Arabs of Muhammad bin Qasim’s expedition[11]. It is claimed that the Arain came from Areeha (Jericho, Syria) with Muhammad Bin Qasim in 92 Hijri (711 AD). [12] Muhammad Hayaat Madni was a Commander in Muhammad Bin Qasim’s Army - 711 AD as held in the family tree of famous Arain Mian Family Baghbanpura. I’m not drawing any conclusions yet, its clear that both stories are based on conjecture and unrealiable resources, but more evidence points to non South Asian roots.

This includes Arain having significantly different blood types to the general Pakistani population, whilst not conclusive it hints to non-native roots, combined with other evidences of non-native roots as discussed the argument does lean toward Arain having migrated from outisde of India but I’m not convinced hence me asking ARAIN what they were told about their caste.

You should get a DNA test. They are 100% reliable. If your paternal ancestors are from the middle east then you should belong to haplogroup J like most people from the middle east. On the other hand if you are L, H or C, then your male ancestors were from India.

Arians are a local stock. A caste that exists in Punjab. They speak punjabi and are indigenous to Pakistan. By profession they were mainly vegetable farmers.
Many Arians migrated from Indian Punjab and setteled in Laylpoor now called Faisalabad.

I don’t understand why most Pakistanies claim foreign origin? May be inferiority complex? Some say we are Arabic some say ooooo we came from Bukhara (central asia) and so on…it could be caz of low self esteem? I don’t know but we do have identity crises in Pakistan

**As far as foreign origins are concerned. Some people do claim foreign descent. Usually, this is because their parents tell them they are descendants of foreigners. Historically, Islam came to India at the hand of middle eastern/ central asian invaders. Many of us claim descent from them. The reasons for such lies are complex, and not a simple self esteem issue, in my opinion. For example, in the early days of Islam, during the Umayyid period, converts to Islam were expected to pay both jizya and zakat. Effectively, one’s conversion to Islam was denied, unless one was affiliated with the Southern Arab tribes. The unintended consequnce of such a policy of aparthied are obvious, people began falsely claiming descent from Souther Arab tribes (to avoid paying double taxes). These prejudices I believe linger till today. After all, those non arabs who told their children they were descendants of arab tribes were hardly going to tell future generations they lied. In most cases that knowledge was probably lost after the first generation, any way. Similar thing probably happened during the central asian invasion of India. **

That said, we should all keep in mind that according to the DNA evidence everyone came to India from somewhere. We all share a common ancestor (proverbial Adam) who lived in Africa about 75,000 years ago. His descendants came out of Africa in different waves at different times. Very few have paternal ancestors who came to India 50k ago, just as very few have ancestors who came more recently, after Islamic invaders conquered India.

Jats, Arians , gujjers , awaans all these castes in punjab and sind are local people from anthrapological and genelogical perspective but……as you know people of Pakistan get extreme pride when they affiliate themselves with arabs, persians and other outsiders.
But i mean..look at them…do they look like the ones who they claim to be? A big laughter!

The number of Syeds in Pakistan is more than total population of a small sized arab countries ( Scientifically not possible), then we have long list of Farooqies, Siddiquies, Osmanies , Abbasies…claimin outside ancestry. Pakistan has the most arabs in the world…( Laughing out Loud)

The funny thing is nobody claims to be a local…Arain are palestinians, Butt are jews, Pathans say we are Bani Israel…Most Urdu speaking are Qureshies, Farooqies , Osmanies…as if " The Entire Arab migrated to Pakistan"

We must realize that are local people and we shoud be proud of our orgin instead of relating ourselves to Turks, Arabs and Persians

This thread has gone on for 2 pages lol and I'm no closer to having my question answered, Bob is right a DNA test is the best route to take, but the money and everything is a bit extreme. Has any Arain here ever had it done on the off chance?

I have been interested in this also. A few years ago a very elderly uncle of my father’s told us that we have Iranian descent. But an elderly person on my Mums side said we had Eqyptian roots.

Both my parents are Arain although I don't believe they were closely related before marriage, but were from the same area. I have also been told many times that I look middle eastern and am often assumed to be whenever I've been in the middle East. However someone on this thread makes a very valid point which is many people from the North of Pakistan - esp who have their origins in the region I am from do look similar to those from the levant - Jordan, Egypt, Iraq etc. I have been in Turkey on a train and convinced a guy was Pakistani from the way he looked - but was Kurdish (of course). Therefore looking as though you are from the middle east or similar to people from that region doesn't say anything about the origins of Arain, in my opinion. It does however tell me the Multan theory is not current.

When I last visited Azad Kashmir, which is where I originate from, I could see the difference in appearance between those who were from the region and those who had migrated to the region from the South - Punjab and further. Only an hours drive from my ancestral home further up towards Kotli people have very fair skin and look more like my family because there has been less migration from other parts of Pakistan. Therefore my familys complexion could well be very typical of the mountain regions such as AJK.

That said I think it would be fascinating to know the result of DNA testing and do think the fact that Arain are a) overwhelmingly Muslims and b) shown to have a common blood type which is uncommon in Pakistan - are both noteworthy.

I wondered about having this test done myself but I know that on my dads my great grandfather married a Punjabi Jatt so wonder how that would change things. As far as I know everyone else was Arain and I believe thats the case on my Mums side too. As the test measure paternal lineage though I wonder whether that would make things unclear. Anyhow if anyone else has had DNA testing done (Arain or not) I'd love to hear about it, I think its great to know more about who we are and where we come from. I also should say that this should not act to divide us or take away from our present reality of being Pakistani, but for adds to the richness of who Pakistani are.

PS: i don't buy this 'arab ancestry' thing of any of the castes in Pakistan....especially syeds...
you see the non-muslim people of same caste.........we are all exactly alike...

Some of my relatives live in Sindh....... thing is..they were alloted land in Sindh when they moved from east punjab to the west side.......... since they knew how to do agriculture n stuff..so they were alloted irrigable land in Punjab as well as Sindh.... Most of my ancestors moved to Lyallpur (faisalabad) division and surrounding areas.....

Some Arains, and other east punjabi families are also settled in layyah, kot addu, mianwali areas.......... they got land allotted in those areas......

I have heard of some Arains who are not originally from east punjab........but i don't know much details about those...
