(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Adults in five predominantly Arab countries are divided on which nation should dominate global affairs, according to a poll by Zogby International released by the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. 19 per cent of respondents would prefer to have France as the only world superpower, while 16 per cent pick China.

Pakistan is third on the list with 14 per cent, followed by Germany with 10 per cent, the United States with eight per cent, Russia with seven per cent, and Britain with four per cent.

The survey was conducted in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. 78 per cent of respondents in the five countries have an unfavourable attitude towards the United States.

In his January 2005 inauguration speech, U.S. president George W. Bush said: “It is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.”

On Feb. 10, Russian president Vladimir Putin criticized U.S. foreign policy, saying, “What is a unipolar world? It implies a single center of power, a single center of force and only one master. (…) Unilateral actions have not resolved conflicts, they have aggravated them.”

aren't these the same guys who have all the oil in the world and have ended up killing each other and becoming more dependent on the west than ever before? hm. They are a good lot to ask about super power. bedouin nomads who haven't grasped civilization in their minds. whole region run by dynasties tyrants dictators, longbeards and militias. whole populations that will not survive without labor from oher countries.and that have not had an riginal thought in 2 centuries.

Can't believe how rich the place is and how miserable the people are. Go ahead - go bomb each other with arsenal bought from the west using money gained from selling oil to the west

Funny thing about being a superpower is that you are not voted in, you work hard enough and you are a superpower. And, Saudi is a funny place to be voting in a poll, when you cannot vote in an election. I think we should ask every screwed up area of the world who the most popular country is....

And, there is that problem of ongoing riots in the uber-popular superpower-to-be, France. But wait, arn't a lot of those rioting people from Morroco and Egypt and Lebanon? Perhaps the reality of France is somewhat worse that the popular perception.....

probably because it doesnt seem like they had a choice. isnt clear from the poll whether they had to pick out a country from all the coutnries in the world or just the five options on the table.

If there were only 5 countries to choose from and Pakistan was #3, I don't think it shows that Arabas are proud of Paksitan at all.

IN general I like that zogy dude, but this poll means little unless it is a part of some larger perceptions study.

oh, and as far as russia and Pooty-tang go, they need to shut up and walk away. I dont trust Russia, and def not pooty-tang.

actually general Arab population is impressed by Pakistan's atomic tests. And that was the mean reason, they voted for it.

Actually, 6 of the 7 countries on the list are nuclear powers.

You would think with the inherent racism built into Arab society, they would have chosen Pakistan just because they are Muslim.

i think they probably chose france b/c they were anti-iraq war from the begining, and france has a huge arab migrant population, and china because its the biggest compettior for world superpower crown with the us, and pakistan because it was muslim

Arabs have always had an affinity towards India, not Pakistan. If you've lived in the Middle East, you'll know that first hand. The perception is Pakistanis are labourers, and Indians are clerical workers.

Why Pakistan? If it's because they're muslim, why didnt they pick Malaysia?

This survey means jack ****. Pakistanis are the largest expatriate population in the Middle East. A survey on the Arabic world doesnt mean only Arabs are answering your polls. What's there that says Pakistanis arent the ones saying Pakistan should be a superpower?

Dont let this be an ego boost for us. As much as we look up to Arabs, they couldnt give a **** about us. It's a one way relationship, and we're not getting much in return.

i fail to understand how it can be an ego boost at all. if we're third choice inspite of being Muslim and relative neighbours out of a competition of 7 countries thats pretty humbling for me.

Humbling? Have you bothered to read the entire survey?

Sure, I want Argentinian hegemony. They leave everyone alone. Their economy is down the drain. They have dirt cheap labour. I’d like to sleep with their girls. But would I want to live there? Hell no.

Do these arabs want to live in Pakistan? Hell no. The ones who did say Pakistan are..well.. you guessed it..Pakistani.

When you’re looking for a hegemony, you dont necessarily want the best. You just want the easiest. You want the one who’ll leave you alone. Isnt that exactly why the USA’s hegemony is hated? Because they impose?

This survey’s question of hegemony means jack ****. At best, they’re figuring out who sucks.
