CAIRO – Staff members at a Riyadh hospital got a surprise when they looked at the fine print on the paper cups they were using. Workers in a storeroom at a Dubai hospital were similarly shocked when they took a close look at the tags on a large shipment of uniforms, towels and sheets. The labels said “Made in Israel,” according to newspaper reports from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both of which have laws that ban imports from the Jewish state.Specialists said the camouflaged trade, with just a small portion receiving publicity, has been occurring for years between Israel and its Arab neighbors. The hidden trade is worth about $400 million a year – about 21/2 times what Israel sold to its official Arab trading partners, Egypt and Jordan, in 2004 – said Gil Feiler, the director of Info-Prod Research, a Tel Aviv consultancy specializing in Arab markets, and an economic professor at Bar-Ilan University. Others said such estimates are inflated significantly.

“All the figures are very sexy for the press, but the reality is much less than what is written,” said Dan Catarivas, foreign trade director at the Manufacturers Association of Israel. The true amount of Arab imports from Israel is impossible to establish because neither side makes it public, with Israeli-made goods moving to Arab customers through third countries – Cyprus or the Netherlands, for example, which list the shipments as local exports. An Arab lawyer who specializes in trade, Omar Obeidat of Al-Tamimi & Co. in Dubai, said the Arab League boycott of Israel is well-enforced, despite the hidden trade through third countries.

“The only person who can confirm is the Israeli party to this covert operation,” Mr. Obeidat said when asked to estimate the worth of goods flowing to Arab nations.Mr. Feiler, who has written a business guide to Israel in Arabic, refused to give more than rough outlines of the trade, which he supports.Israeli exports to Arab countries, he said, are mostly from three categories: agricultural equipment, such as for irrigation – a field in which Israel leads the world; animal vaccines; and “technological knowledge and components.” He refused to elaborate on the latter. Mr. Feiler said the Israeli origins of products is hidden by methods other than third-country exports. Arabs of Lebanese origin in Israel sell counterfeit Lebanese certificates of origin complete with forged government stamps.

Some Israeli factories have departments of so-called quality control – where any Hebrew writing or “Made in Israel” marks are removed from product components.“I saw it with my eyes,” he said. Some ships even sail from the northern Israeli port of Haifa to Beirut, Mr. Feiler said. The Beirut Port Authority would deny that the practice exists.Sending Israeli products to Persian Gulf states is easier, said Doron Peskin, research director at Info-Prod Research Ltd. "The difficult thing is not to make mistakes.

"What probably happened in the case of the paper cups, for instance, was a delivery manager shipping the wrong boxes – those not stripped of Israeli markings. The Arab News quoted the purchaser of the cups as saying they arrived in a cardboard box that looked exactly the same as the ones he normally received.Bahrain’s recent decision to abandon the Arab boycott provoked an uproar in the Gulf state. Although legislators sought to reverse the decision, the government insisted the move did not signal a normalization of ties with Israel, but was implemented to ensure the U.S. Congress approved a free-trade agreement with Bahrain.

The United Arab Emirates and Oman are expected to follow Bahrain’s lead as they negotiate free-trade agreements with the United States. When Saudi Arabia joined the World Trade Organization last month, it quietly said it would treat all members equally. Israel is a WTO member. But there is a big difference between decisions in principle and the open flow of Israeli goods. As the big Saudi food retailer Turki al-Sharbatly said recently: “If I bring Israeli products into my shop, no one will deal with me.”

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

Why do we continuously insist on boycotting Israel? I personally believe, and this is an honest political opinion - that muslims, and especially Arabs are being TOLD to boycott Israel as a major distraction. In my view these arab nations can easily distract their illiterate populations from regional, significant issues by raising such diversions.

We seem to be more insistent on banning Israel than getting ourselves out of the huge hole we're in. As a state, as an economic power, as a success Israel is what we all want to be. Instead of aiming to resemble a power such as Israel, we further isolate ourselves by refusing to address real issues that concern our future. Please dont forget Israel was made in the same decade Pakistan was. Their patriots were migrants like ours. Their state was made for a religious homeland ike ours. There are no similarities today. They have suceeded where we have failed.

There are other ways to tell Israel what it does is wrong. Do you honestly believe israel will listen or even care about third world economies pushing for reform? Do you honestly believe our constant hatred will make them change? Do you honestly believe blatantly discriminating against them will change anything? In the end we're just fools for actually caring about things like this instead of things that'll help us.

Re: Arabs buy goods ‘made in Israel’

What are you talking about…You very well know…on whose money Israel has prospered…There is no comparison between Israels course of development to that of Pakistans…

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

Please dont condemn them for their success. Can you answer why is it that we did not get investment - is it because rich jews help rich jews and rich muslims hire foreigners? We did get investments, we still do. Pakistan in the last year has been blessed with bribes. Oddly enough, corruption can really help us right now but most of it's leaving our country.

There is a comparison, you're just not digging deep enough to see it. A reminder, in 2001-2002 Israel was number 3 on the US's list of development grants. Pakistan was number 4. If you want even newer statistics, last year Pakistan fell to number 7(USD590million), Israel took an even larger stumble - it stood at 9(USD525million). Israel has had no advantage over Pakistan from the US in recent years.

Just for fun, guess who came in 1rst last year? It rhymes with a rack.

I've got an itching that the reason we have no infrastruction in our countries is our own doing, or are you telling me Israel makes our people illegally overthrow elected leaders? Wait a second, dont we have a crook leading our country? The same crook who's so well liked he's afraid of leaving the capital.

In all sincerity I wish and pray Pakistan sees some good from the prosperity we see today. We as a people can easily do something with our great country, it truly is. We had a democracy that was ours, we can reclaim it. We're not condemned to poverty, illiteracy, isolation and intolerance - yet. We're blessed with the natural resources and people to develop a future where issues like this will not matter to us. One day we will not see a label with Israel's name on it and sigh in disgust without cause, we'll grow up one day and clean up what is ours before we devote so much time to Israel. Lets work to make ourselves a little better before we run out of excuses for failing as badly as we very likely will.

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

As far as I was aware Palestinian made or grown produce is labelled as "made in israel" too

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

Bravo. :). Hate is not the answer. This proves how arabs have been taught hatred in their minds. We need to look at things in positive not negative. We do have differences but its better if we resolve it on the table not with guns.
Wake up Pakistanis, you could be best example for Arabs.

Re: Arabs buy goods ‘made in Israel’

I think the title is a bit misleading. It will be a shame to put people of Dubai in the same “Arab” designation as with the Islamists of Egypt.

Dubai people of Arab descent are the most forward looking and tolerant people in the whole area. They are more tolerant than Arabs of Kuwait, and non-Arabs of Karachi or Bandar Abbas.

Anything goes in Dubai if it would help progress and business. In the rest of Middle East, Iran, and Pakistan, people are most anti-progress and anti-business.

So if you see in our neighborhood, Made in Israel products being sold, or Jewish people walking freely (and not butchered a la Danny Pearl), you bet it is Dubai. Terming people of this wonderful city as “Arab” smacks of ignorance.

I hope one day Karachi could be as tolerant as Dubai is today. Amin!

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

Unsurprising. What was the last boycott of an exporting nation that actually was effective? In principle, the boycott is comendable even though it is impossible to enforce.

In some matters, principles matter more than all else.

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

^ that is a valid point, however the real culprits in this matter are the corrupt rulers themselves who sell oil worth billions if not trillions of dollars worth to the enemy who thus in turn supply and feed the squatter state of israel sustaining its limited lifespan yet furthur!

Re: Arabs buy goods ‘made in Israel’

So who else you suggest they sell their oil to? Probably to Maulanas so that they can drink the oil to help relieve the ever present constipation!

Oh Bhai sahib, oil is a commodity that gets sold just like Basmati rice exported from Pakistan. You have it and you sell it. It is that simple. Just like Maulanas sold their services to your enemy in Afghanistan. These Meesnay (charlatan) Maulanas don’t even move their munjee (charpoy) when $$ are flowing in. However they raise a raucous when the inflow stops. Damn hypocrites.

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

Nothing wrong woth trading with jews becuase Muslim. Have a look at the life of our Prophet he traded with jews, had loans even passed judgement on jewish individuals becuase they truseted him to be fair.

THe relaity is Israel wont dissapaear. Make peace and live in peace.

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

Israel has always lived of American money. Had they not, they'd be a state like Ethiopia. They are not self sufficient.

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

The Israeli economy dwarfs that of their neighbors. Per capita GDP is 3 times that of Lebanon, Iran or Saudi Arabia and 5 times that of Egypt, Jordan or Syria. They export more than Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Jordan, Yemen, Syria, Bahrain, Tunisia and Egypt combined. They have a diversified, modern economy with an educated work force and innovative entrepreneurs. The US has helped them achieve their success, but they are hardly an Ethiopa (or any Arab state).

Re: Arabs buy goods 'made in Israel'

Yea, Israel rocks, and we Jews know how to take care of our homeland. Even though I am American first, and American last, Israel still has a special place in my heart.
