I have always been confused with who makes what. I went to an Iraqis house and had this delicious meal which was rice in leaves.
I went to a Morroccan and they don’t know about it but i got served the most beautiful mint tea.
I asked them if they made hummous and they don’t. This is for the Arabs on the forum who makes what??
Like who makes the hummous etc. Are these food universal in the Arab world or does every Arab country have it’s own unique dishes?
Lebanese food is famous and universal.
The Iraqi dishes that you mentioned above, (rice covered with leaves) are quite popular in summer. Some of the Iraqi dishes are distinct only to them. Some other dishes are almost similar to Iranian but with some twist. These people use too much tomatos and lemons.
Meanwhile the Egyptian dishes are pretty much like the African Arab/Sudanese or Algerian/Tunisian. They use a lot of spices.
The best food is Lebanese, Iraqi and Iranian. They do have elaborate cuisine and 100 of ways to cook 1 thing. Perfect culinary. :)
I was told this by my ex-gf (she was Iraqi).
Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Jordan all have smilier food. There countries are known as the "Sham countries"
Iraqis have there own thing. Egypt have there own thing, Tunisia has there own thing, Morocco have there own thing, Algeria have there own thing, Sudan have there own thing and Libya have there own thing. Most of the African Arab nations don't eat much rice, they usually have couscous.
Then you got the Arabian peninsula which are all different also. Saudi's have there own thing, Kuwait there own thing, Bahrain there own thing, UAE there own thing, Oman there own thing, Qatar there own thing, then you got Yemen which every city has there own thing, most Yemeni cooking especially the South is ALL desi cooking from the drinks all the way to that thing the guys chew that is wrapped in some sort of leave and makes your teeth red, they call it "tumbuch" I guess.
Arabs differ in everything, food differs, clothes differ, cultures differ and so on even the languages. If you go to Morocco and Algeria these people don't know how to even speak Arabic. Yemen is supposed to be the place to have spoken the correct Arabic, the Quran way but over the years we have had Turkish influence and then the Indians came in through the British so are Arabic is soo strange now.

One of my closest Lebanese friend's mom makes yummy rice-in-leaves as well. She made zaatar as well, which is slightly different than the zaatar in the United Arab Emirates.
i think, different Arab countries have probably incorporated numerous dishes into their own culture - it's like, depending upon which region of Pakistan one is in, you taste differences in the way that they make samosas, chapatis, kababs etc. Essentially it's still the same dish, but there are diverse differences in the type and quantity of spices used, how it's served, how it's cooked etc.
Does that make any sense?
Has anyone tried those delicious arab sweets made of roasted pine nuts and pistachios mixed in honey and then deep fried, they are just to die for.
