hello all!

i’d like some clarification on the rules of aqeeqah…

  1. is head shaving farz for boys and girls or sunnat?

  2. does islam say 1 goat for girls/2 goats for boys or is this a desi thing? also, can someone please explain why its 1 for girls, 2 for boys?

  3. is there a time limit for the aqeeqah?

  1. whole ritual of Aqeeqah is sunnat, so every part of it including shaving head and weighing the shaved hair and giving out silver to poor of that weight, is sunna

  2. Dont know the answer except that Prophet :saw2: said so. That just shows that girls are such a blessing that they are always less of a burden on parents than boys.

  3. Sunnat is to do it on the 7th day, 14th day or 21st day.

**1. performing 'aqeeqah is sunna

  1. yes, one goat/lamb for a girl and two for boys*.....i think it's because boys get more than the girls in inheritance. it's NOT because the boys are better than girls but simply because Allah has put MORE responsibilities on men...men are made qawwaameen [provider] for the family. It's the same ratio that has been reflected in the number of animals to be sacrificed. *
  2. NO, there is NO time limit***...in India, poorer parents postpone 'aqeeqa till the time of the kid's wedding so they could use the sacrificial meat for shaadii da'vat.*

**Book ‘Sacrifice on Occasion of Birth (`Aqiqa)’ of Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 380
**
Narrated Salman bin 'Amir Ad-Dabbi: I heard Allah’s Apostle :saw2: saying, “'Aqiqa is to be offered for a (newly born) boy, so slaughter (an animal) for him, and relieve him of his suffering.” (Note: It has been quoted in Fateh-AL-Bari that the majority of the Religious Scholars agrees to the Hadith narrated in Sahih At-TlRMlZY that the Prophet :saw2: was asked about Aqiqa and he ordered 2 sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl and that is his tradition “SUNNA”.)

Book ‘Sacrifice (Kitab Al-Dahaya)’ of Sunan Abu-Dawud Hadith No. 2830
** Narrated Umm Kurz: The Apostle of Allah :saw2: said: Two sheep which resemble each other are to be sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl.

Hadith No. 2831

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub: The Prophet :saw2: said: A boy is in pledge for his Aqiqah. Sacrifice is made for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved and is smeared with blood. When Qatadah was asked about smearing with blood, how that should be done, he said: When you cut the head (i.e. throat) of the animal (meant for Aqiqah), you may take a few hair of it, place them on its veins, and then place them in the middle of the head of the infant, so that the blood flows on the hair (of the infant) like a threat. Then its head may be washed and shaved off.

Hadith No. 2836

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As: The Apostle of Allah :saw2: was asked about the aqiqah. He replied: Allah does not like the breaking of ties (uquq), as though he disliked the name. And he said: If anyone has a child born to him and wishes to offer a sacrifice on its behalf, he may offer two resembling sheep for a boy and one for a girl. And he was asked about fara’. He replied: Fara’ is right. If you leave it (i.e. let it grow till it becomes a healthy camel of one year or two years, then you give it to a widow or give it in the path of Allah for using it as a riding beast, it is better than slaughtering it at the age when its meat is stuck to its hair, and you turn over your milking vessel and annoy your she-camel.

Hadiht No. 2837

Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib: When a boy was born to one of us in the pre-Islamic period, we sacrificed a sheep and smeared his head with its blood; but when Allah brought Islam, we sacrificed a sheep, shaved his head and smeared his head with saffron.
