Apr-Jun 03: Australia in West Indies

Australian team for second Test of Travelex Tour of the West Indies](http://uk.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2003/APR/170934_ACB_17APR2003.html)

The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) announced today that the National Selection Panel (NSP) has named an unchanged line-up for the second Test of Australia’s Travelex Tour of the West Indies, beginning at Queen’s Park, Trinidad on Saturday 19 April.

The team that claimed victory by nine wickets over the West Indies in the first Test at Georgetown, Guyana is:

Stephen Waugh (captain)
Ricky Ponting (vice-captain)
Andrew Bichel
Adam Gilchrist
Jason Gillespie
Matthew Hayden
Brad Hogg
Justin Langer
Brett Lee NSW
Darren Lehmann
Stuart MacGill NSW
Martin Love (12th man)

I'm still puzzeled by the inclusion of Brad Hogg. I thought he was one day specialist, how is he playing test cricket.

I don’t understand why Mattew Hayden is still there after being poor with bat lately. Give chance to Martin Love.

2nd Test Match: PRIVEW

West Indies v Australia preview

**Second Test, Trinidad: West Indies v Australia - starts 1505 BST Saturday. **

In recent years, Australia have usually relied on only four front-line bowlers to overwhelm the opposition.

They broke with tradition for the first Test in Guyana, however, by including spinners Stuart MacGill and Brad Hogg in a five-man attack.

Brian Lara is back on home turf in Port of Spain.

It proved the correct decision as they completed a nine-wicket victory and, unsurprisingly, the selectors have opted to leave well alone as the series continues.

But that decision offers the West Indies a ray of hope, if they can come up with the right bowling combination themselves.

With Australia fielding only six specialist batsmen, they need wickets with the new ball to try and expose the middle order early.

In the first Test, they removed Matthew Hayden but were then on the receiving end as Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting made centuries.

Merv Dillon and Pedro Collins managed only one wicket apiece in the match and the temptation must be for the home side to throw uncapped Tino Best in at the deep end after a domestic season which saw him claim 39 victims.

[thumb=B]_39113069_banks203ap.JPG[/thumb]

Banks was chosen ahead of more experienced spinners

But Best’s chances of playing may depend on whether the selectors decide that a spinner is needed, with Omari Banks ready and waiting for his first taste of Test cricket.

West Indies captain Brian Lara insists his side took a lot of positives out of the previous game.

**"Before the series began, I said I wanted us to compete and we did that in Guyana, when we lost because of the first session on the first day.

In Trinidad, we expect to go the distance. We want to play good cricket and compete and if we can do that, and get a bit of luck, I think there’s a good possibility that we can win the Test match." **

One piece of good news for the home side is the return of vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, who has recovered from a finger injury.

Marlon Samuels is the batsman most likely to make way, but he bowled 30 overs in Guyana and if he drops out, the chances of Banks making his debut would increase.

[thumb=B]_39113075_waugh203.JPG[/thumb]

Steve Waugh will ensure Australia retain their focus.

There will also be a change behind the stumps with youngster Carlton Baugh replacing Ridley Jacobs, who has a torn groin muscle.

Baugh has already taken a century off the tourists for a Guyana Board XI and Lara is looking forward to seeing how the 20-year-old responds to the challenge of Test cricket.

“It was a joy to see him bat in the nets and I’m waiting to see the youngster play his first Test match,” he said.

West Indies can hardly fare worse than they did four years ago in Trinidad when they were bowled out for 51 in the second innings - their lowest Test score - as Australia romped to a 312-run win.

  • West Indies (from): Brian Lara (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Wavell Hinds, Devon Smith, Daren Ganga, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Marlon Samuels, Carlton Baugh, David Bernard, Omari Banks, Vasbert Drakes, Mervyn Dillon, Pedro Collins, Tino Best.

  • Australia: Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting (vice-captain), Darren Lehmann, Steve Waugh (captain), Adam Gilchrist (wicket-keeper), Brad Hogg, Andy Bichel, Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie, Stuart MacGill.

PT, booting out Matthew Hayden would be like booting out Tendulkar from the Indian team. He is one of the best batsman in the world today, he is on a lean patch, and the best way to get back into form is to play a weak bowling attack of Windies.
Instead they should kick out that no good fat baldy Derren Lehman, and bring in Martin Love.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat.

2nd Test Match - DAY 1

Ashok De Silva did it again. This time, two error decisions against Aussies. Justin Langer and Hayden weren't LBW. I don't understand why ICC has given status to umpires like De Silva. The guy needs to go back to Cricket Academy. Oh wait, before that, he needs to get his eye check.

Aussies have dominated the game, thanks to the wonderful partnership of 315 runs by Lehman(Umair, were you saying?) and Ricky Ponting. Nice fireworks done by Gilchrist in the end.

Umpire Asoka DeSilva continues poor form

He gave in-form Langer and Hayden wronglfully out LBW. He is continuing his decision making errors where he left in first test.

I hate it when an Asian umpire makes stupid errors - be it Asoka or Venkat. These guys are Elite umpires and should be making far fewer errors. They should at least get 9 out of 10 right but the contrary seems to be the case.

2nd Test Match - DAY 2

[thumb=B]044071.JPG[/thumb]

Lara bowled for 91 by Hogg

Domination of the Aussies in the 2nd Test. Thanks to the wonderful performance with bat by Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Darren Lehman.

Lara was unlucky, couldn't get his century. I think West Indies can't keep it anymore. Ganga and Sarwan will hold on as long as they could but Follow-on is almost on the cards, I predict

I doubt that too :)

I am really impressed with this Windies batting, despite the services of Gayle, Chanderpaul and Hooper, they have done exceptionally well. There is a very good chance of drawing the match, if Windies batsman can stick to the pitch in the next inning. Winning the match is almost impossible, unless they have someone like Shoaib Akhtar who can knock the Aussie team out for 137 runs.
