Apr-Jun 03: Australia in West Indies

I think 600 ( a lead of 350+ ) would ensure Aus won't bat again. I see at least another century by middle order and a quick fire 50 by someone in the tail.

You are right, a target of 363 (when Aus makes 600) for WI would be too much, while 263 is very possible which will also be a challenge (not really) for Aus bowling.

1st Test Match - DAY 2

Caribbean boys have been slaughtered by the Aussies with bat and poor umpiring by Ashok De Silva and Koertzen.

Justin Langer and Ricky Pointing scored century. Gilchirst had a great knock of 77. Aussies lead by 252 runs.

At Stumps of Day 2, West Indies are 16/0.

This is called toying with the opposition.

:rotfl:

Nah..It was because of bad light.
But why bowl 6 overs with spinners. Why not use fast bowlers and let umpires call it a day.And start fresh next day.

Or is it that ICC’s new policy of hefty fine for slow bowling is already implemented.

1st Test Match - DAY 3

Wonderful knock by Lara, Ganga. Smith played great too.

As expected, I knew it Lara will hit a century and he did. He was so confident hitting Aussies all around the ground. Sweet moment of the day was when Lara-Waugh came Face-To-Face and then Lara hitted a boundary. But when Lara got out as a result of hit wicket, it was just terrible. Reminds me when Lara got run out against the Kiwis in a World Cup match. :( SIGH

Brian Lara's Knock of 110: Skipper's Inning!

Ganga played an awesome inning. He was out just before the end of the day. Actually, Steve Waugh SET HIM UP. Darren Lehman was giving off the stump ball so that Ganga play the shot to the mid wicket; and he did but couldn't pass it through from the strong hands of Bret Lee.

Darren Ganga: Superb Knock of 113

At Stumps of Day 3, West Indies lead by 129 runs with 5 wickets remaining in hands. In order to win the game, Caribbean Boys gotta give the target around 400+ runs 'cause Aussies are the only team who can make/chase the target of 300+ runs in just 50 overs rightnow at the moment. Chanderpaul gotta have to make the century. Drakes was looking confident against Lee and Bichel today. Jacobs can do some wonders but I think he was hurt so bad by one of Gillispe/Lee's bouncer, he wouldn't be able to play good as he did in the first inning. I read, probably on BBC reviews that Jacobs wouldn't be able to do Wicket-Keeping. I hope, this turns out to be untrue 'cause Caribbean Boys, are the ones who have been playing without much talented and experience players.

Let's see what happens tomorrow. :)

Come on, do it.

WI lead by 129 runs only, if they can make another 200-300, they'll be in good shape. but I think Aust. will kick their ass tomorrow as good batsmen are gone already.

1st Test Match - DAY 4

Aussies won the 1st Test Match by 9 wickets. Gillespie ripped apart remaining Caribbean Batsman as the good batsmens were already bowled out yesterday. 147 runs to win was an easy target for the Aussies. Aussies did it with the lost of one wicket. Justin and Ricky, scored 78 and 42 runs.

[thumb=B]_39091117_gillespie_get.JPG[/thumb]

Gillespie's successful appeal

Hopefully, in the remaining Test matches, Hooper, Gayle, Sarwan will join the rest of the team. But you gotta admit, these Caribbean youngsters are great fighters. They didn't let Aussies win easily. It wasn't a cake walk for them. West Indies first inning became the victim of Umpires' stupid decisions, went all against Caribbean Boys. Despite of that, they were able hang in there.

And with Sarwan, Gayle, Hooper back in the team, hopefully, will balance the two teams. :)

PT in test matches, extras aren't a huge deal. Giving 42 extra runs in 100 overs isn't that bad.

No, not Dish Network. Wisden is showing Aussies tour to West Indies. 175 bucks for 4 Test Matches and 7 ODI’s. Complete entertainment package!

This mean machine continues to surge forward, seems like there's no stopping them. They've got so many options to fall back onto, unlike other teams which rely on chancy brilliances of a certain hero-for-the-day.

And there's a simple reason for that, a thoruoughly professional, organized attitude that runs throughout the hierarchy at the ACB.

Well done Aussies!

Waugh hails team effort](BBC SPORT | Cricket | WI v Aus 2003 | Waugh hails team effort)

Australia captain Steve Waugh paid tribute to his side after they wrapped up a comfortable nine-wicket win over the West Indies in the first Test in Guyana.

It was Australia’s 13th win from their last 15 Test matches, although they still trail South Africa in the official Test rankings.

“I was pleased with the way we played this match and it was a good team effort,” said Waugh.

“We worked hard - it’s not an easy wicket to get a victory on.”

Waugh also dismissed the notion his side were concentrating their efforts on West Indies captain Brian Lara.

“We won this Test by nine wickets, so I’m not worried about Brian Lara,” he said.

"I’d be happy if Brian made 100 in every match and we won by nine wickets.

Report: Aussies record easy win
“We started off well on day one having the West Indies at 5-53 which put us in a great position and I was really pleased with the way we finished the game off today.”

Waugh, making a record 157th Test appearance, singled out bowler Jason Gillespie for particular praise.

Gillespie took 5-39 in West Indies’ second innings on his return to the Test stage after an Achilles tendon injury.

“For Jason to take five wickets on this pitch is a magnificent performance,” said Waugh.

I’m very proud of the guys

Brian Lara
“He really deserves the rewards for the work he’s put in over a long period of time.”

And despite several questionable decisions, Waugh refused to criticise the umpires’ performance.

“You don’t want to end up with robots out there,” he said.

"We don’t want the sport to be Americanised.

"We want to have controversy and we want to have something to talk about. That’s why cricket is unique.

“We all make mistakes.”

Gillespie was delighted with his five wicket haul.

He said: "The wicket was a bit up and down and I just bowled straight.

"That’s what the goal was and that’s what we did.

“To take 20 wickets on that pitch was fantastic for us as a team.”

Newly reinstated West Indies captain Brian Lara tried to look on the bright side of a crushing defeat.

He said: "I’m very proud of the guys.

“We made some inroads into the Australians and we now have a better idea on how they are going to play for the rest of the series.”

Good job, Zero_One. Always nice to see helpful buddies on Gupshup.

Have you guys heard the words of Steve Waugh regarding Umpire Mistakes? I’m not making this up. See (Report)](http://www.dawn.com/2003/04/15/spt6.htm).

According to Waugh, he didn’t want involvement of the thrid umpire 'cause he doesn’t want sports to be Americanized. This absurd coming from Steve Waugh, the man I consider one of the best Cricketers of all time.

No hard feelings but this is just wrong and sad! THUMBS DOWN :nook: Admit, all Umpires make mistakes but what if Aussies were in the same shoes as Caribbean Boys? Wouldn’t Aussie Media busy in thrashing Umpires?

Sarwan back for Windies

Sarwan is Back!

Ramnaresh Sarwan and off-spinner Omari Banks have been called into the West Indies squad for the second Test against Australia.

The 20-year-old Banks became the first player from the small Leeward Island of Anguilla to be named in a senior West Indies side.

Sarwan is included in the 15-man squad after recovering from the fractured finger on his left hand.

The team vice-captain passed a fitness test on Sunday after Australia’s nine-wicket win in the first Test.

The 13 players named for the first Test have all been retained, although **wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs is likely to miss out on the second Test after tearing a groin muscle in the opening Test.

A further assessment on the severity of his injury will be made once the squad arrives in Trinidad on Tuesday.

It means there is still no place for opener Chris Gayle. **

Gayle remains on the outside after being dropped from the first Test squad in the wake of his decision to play in a Double Wicket competition rather than play in the Carib Beer Series final for Jamaica.

  • **West Indies squad: **

Brian Lara (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Wavell Hinds, Devon Smith, Daren Ganga, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Marlon Samuels, Ridley Jacobs, Carlton Baugh, David Bernard, Omari Banks, Vasbert Drakes, Mervyn Dillon, Pedro Collins, Jermaine Lawson.

Hopefully, Chris Gayle will replace Ridely Jacobs, who’s injured.

Jacobs out from the squad as he hasn’t recover from strained muscle injury yet. Sad to know Lawson being diagnosed with chicken pox. :frowning:

Omari Banks and Tino Best will make their Test Match debut.

Team manager Ricky Skerritt said Jacobs would begin his rehabilitation in Trindad before returning to Antigua.

**Off-spinner Omari Banks has been added to the squad, while 21-year-old Tino Best has been called up to cover for Lawson’s absence. **

The uncapped Barbadian has been a leading wicket-taker, with 39 in the recently-completed Carib Beer regional series.

**Doctors cleared vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and fellow Shivnarine Chanderpaul to play in the second Test. **

The second Test begins on Saturday at Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval.

Waugh faces a race against time to be fit for the second Test

Waugh set for second Test

Australia skipper Steve Waugh hopes to be fit for the second Test against West Indies despite sustaining a gashed hand in Guyana last week.

Waugh, who became the most capped player ever in Australia’s first-Test victory, split the webbing on his left hand while fielding on day three.

The 37-year-old returned to the field with his hand heavily strapped, though he was not required to bat in Australia’s second innings.

He faces a race against time, with the second Test starting on Saturday in Trinidad.

“It’s sore. There’s six stitches in it,” Waugh said on Tuesday.

**"It’s going to be sore for a week.

“You still have to be able to hold a bat properly and I have to be able to do justice to my position in the side.” **

**Waugh’s toughness is legendary in cricket. **

A shattered nose did not keep him out of a Test in Sri Lanka in 1999 after a mid-field collision with team-mate Jason Gillespie.

And he only missed one Test in England in 2001 despite tearing a hole in his calf muscle during a marathon knock of 150 at The Oval.
