Waugh faces a race against time to be fit for the second Test
Waugh set for second Test
Australia skipper Steve Waugh hopes to be fit for the second Test against West Indies despite sustaining a gashed hand in Guyana last week.
Waugh, who became the most capped player ever in Australia’s first-Test victory, split the webbing on his left hand while fielding on day three.
The 37-year-old returned to the field with his hand heavily strapped, though he was not required to bat in Australia’s second innings.
He faces a race against time, with the second Test starting on Saturday in Trinidad.
“It’s sore. There’s six stitches in it,” Waugh said on Tuesday.
**"It’s going to be sore for a week.
“You still have to be able to hold a bat properly and I have to be able to do justice to my position in the side.” **
**Waugh’s toughness is legendary in cricket. **
A shattered nose did not keep him out of a Test in Sri Lanka in 1999 after a mid-field collision with team-mate Jason Gillespie.
And he only missed one Test in England in 2001 despite tearing a hole in his calf muscle during a marathon knock of 150 at The Oval.
