Apr-Jun 03: Australia in West Indies

Well played by WI. Hinds played the best innings of his life and won WI the match. Saby, I agree, it was surprising to see ghilcrist completely miss the last ball, I guess there was a lot of pressure on the Aussies after a long time and you could tell they were nervous out there. Ponting looked like he was gonna cry any second :hehe: Anyway welll played WI! :bhangra: :nuch:

yes Ponting and Brett Lee too, missed a catch at long on and bowled the worst over you can bowl with three wides and one no ball. But lee nearly swung the match away from windies with wickets of sarwan and samuels in one over. Over all, aussies were showing some chinks in thier armor.

West Indies 254 for 7 (Hinds 125*, Sarwan 50) beat Australia 252 (Gilchrist 64, Lehmann 43) by three wickets

When Australia’s unprecedented run of 21 consecutive victories finally came to an end at Port-of-Spain last week, Ricky Ponting had described the result as a wake-up call for his side. Today, however, it seemed that someone had pressed the snooze button, as Australia dawdled through long periods of the match, only to be rudely awoken by inspired innings from Wavell Hinds, who cavorted to an unbeaten 125, his second one-day century, and his second matchwinning innings in consecutive matches.

As is his habit, Hinds was virtually anonymous in the early part of his innings. At first, he looked on impassively from the non-striker’s end as Brett Lee and Chris Gayle indulged in a magnificent duel, which involved three fizzing off-side boundaries, a cartwheeling off stump from a no-ball, and eventually a ferocious throat-ball that Gayle nudged to Gilchrist behind the stumps (23 for 1).

But, after taking 13 overs to reach double-figures, Hinds exploded into action, belting Bichel mightily over long-on for the first of six sixes. The aerial route seemed the best option on this pitch – by contrast, Brian Lara endured a frustrating innings of 15, repeatedly hitting the ring of fielders on the off side, before giving himself room and miscuing a return catch to Andrew Symonds, (67 for 2).

Ramnaresh Sarwan proved sturdier company, reaching his first half-century of the series in adding 114 for the third wicket. Hinds reached his own half-century in sheepish fashion, clubbing Brad Hogg for six straight through the hands of Lee at long-on. But his confidence was undaunted, and six overs later, Nathan Hauritz received the same treatment, only bettered executed. Hauritz was soon driven from the attack, via a Sarwan four through midwicket and yet another Hinds six over long-on, but Lee’s return once again changed the picture.

His first delivery was in the slot, but Sarwan’s footwork wasn’t quite up to the task, and Symonds took a fine low catch at short cover. Two balls later, Marlon Samuels had his stumps shattered by Lee’s trademark inswinging yorker, and at 181 for 4 with ten overs remaining, Australia had eased into a position to strike.

Ponting turned to Darren Lehmann’s offspin to complement the pace of Lee, but Hinds deposited him over long on, only for Ricardo Powell to ruin the effect with a tame return chip in the same over (193 for 5). And when Ridley Jacobs swung wildly at Bichel for Jimmy Maher to pouch a swirling chance at fine-leg, Hinds was fast running out of partners. His response was emphatic – Gillespie was hoisted for six, this time over long-off, and when Lee was belted through midwicket for four, Australia were all but beaten. The end was appropriate – Gilchrist, whose keeping had been ragged all day, conceded four byes off Lee.

Australia’s total of 252 had been an equally stop-start affair, which owed everything to a pair of buccaneering knocks from Gilchrist at the top of the order, and Bichel at the bottom. Gilchrist had added 90 for the first wicket with Matthew Hayden, but when Hayden hoisted Corey Collymore to Hinds on the midwicket boundary, the rot set in. Three overs later, Ponting was run out by Lara for 2 (105 for 2), and Lara was back in the action for the very next delivery, a good-length ball which Gilchrist slapped straight to point (105 for 3).

Darren Lehmann and Andrew Symonds repaired the damage with a sedate partnership of 44, but the spin duo of Gayle and Marlon Samuels stymied the runs in the middle overs, picking up four more wickets between them. Bichel, as ever, was in no mood to capitulate, lamping 17 runs off an over from Ramnaresh Sarwan, including a lost-ball six over long-off. But it would have been a travesty if Australia had pulled this one out of the fire. They lacked intensity throughout, and after their exertions over the last six months, they will be hard-pressed to raise their game one last time on Sunday.

6th ODI - West Indies won by 3 wickets.

Wavell Hinds of the West Indies runs off the field with a stump after hitting a winning boundary to defeat Australia by three wickets in 6th ODI.

Good win for West Indies. :slight_smile:

Aussies started off their innings sky-high with Gilchrist knock of 64. As Gilchrist departs, things started to fall for Aussies. Middle order batsman struggled as Lara used part-time spinners than regular medium pace bowlers. The pitch seems to be more supportive for spinners than fast bowlers. If that’s the case, good thinking by Lara. West Indies might able to win tomorrow’s game.

Also, there was no one to support Lehmann from the other hand for a big partnership. It was Bichel, in the end, who, once again proved to be a good all-rounder, otherwise, Aussies wouldn’t make it to 252.

Wavell Hinds of the West Indies waves his bat after reaching a century against Australia in 6th ODI.

The main feature of the today’s game was wonderful knock of 125 N.O. by Hinds. His second ODI century with 11 boundaries(6 sixes, 5 fours). Sarwan and Hinds’s partnership was fruitful, match-winning for West Indies second consecutive time over Aussies.

Look at the 30 extra runs given by the Aussies. I wonder when did Aussies gave away runs like that before? VB Series I guess?

This match was a thril to watch. I think it was Aust. own fault in the bowling and fielding department that lead them to a loss otherwise they could have won this match. But that doesn’t mean I am taking away anything from the Windies, they played really well specially Hinds and Sarwan :k:. The last match on Sunday will be more exciting from all the previous 6 matches cuz after the first 4 matches lost Lara said he will be looking forward to the next best of 3 and Ponting has to defeat Windies in the last match otherwise Lara will be winning his challenge best of 3 :k:

7th ODI - West Indies won by 9 wickets

Oh boy, Aussies slumped to thrid straight defeat.

[thumb=B]larabichel1.JPG[/thumb]

Brian Lara, left, is congratulated by Andy Bichel right, after the West Indies defeated Australia by nine wickets in the 7th ODI.

Aussies inning wasn’t good. Gilchrist and Hayden went cheaply. Ricky got hurt on his hip and returned back to the pitch at the last moment of the inning. Symonds and Lehmann put a partnership of 107 runs; and Brad Hogg contributed 53 runs, first half-century in his ODI career. Lara again used part-time spinner than regular medium pacers and it turned out to be good deal as Chris Gayle took 5 wickets in 10 overs. His best ODI bowling figures; and grabbed the MoM award.

[thumb=B]hinds2.JPG[/thumb]

Wavell Hinds, left, bats as Adam Gilchrist, right, watches the ball go past.

West Indies started off their inning very good as Chris Gayle smashed Lee, Gillispe and McGrath all over the ground. Aussies were bowling with good line and length but it wasn’t ever near to dangerous as we seen in the past.

Hinds, again, was in the headline as he scored his third century in ODI. Lara, finished off by coming downt the track and there goes back-to-back 3 Sixes on Lehmann. This kind of victory over Aussies is very special for the West Indies; as they have finally broken the ice.

[thumb=B]aussieteam1.JPG[/thumb]

The Australian team poses with a trophy after winning the seven match one-day international series against the West Indies 4-3.

With this 7th match, it brings the wonderful series to end. Aussies won both Test and ODIs series, but, West Indies fought back really good by setting a new World Record of chasing the biggest lead in the Test Match; breaking the winning-streak of Aussies in the ODI.

There were some ups and downs moment during the series like Showdown of Sarwan and McGrath in the middle of outfield; and Aussies PM backing McGrath that it was a very Australian thing to do. Poor umpiring in the 1st and 3rd Test Match troubled West Indies alot than Aussies. Steve Waugh comments on bad umpiring like not to criticize Aussies as Americans {Are we getting political here, hey?} which doesn’t make sense.

But, anyway, it turned out to be good as Sarwan and McGrath apologized to each other rightafter what happened out in the field. Lara praised Bichel as he targetted him twice in the Test Match; and thrice in the ODIs. In the end, it was a good series to watch. I enjoyed every bit of it. :slight_smile:

Very entertaining tour. I thought it was going to be one sides and boring but it turned out to be a very enjoyable performance from both sides.
Thanks to Zero_One, I was available to watch some of the matches.

Wavel Hinds is turning out to be a very good batsman, too bad he didn't get to play the early one dayers, or the series would have been different.

I thought Aussies losing the first 2 were just off days but 3 in a row looks to be a little worry for the world champs, but you have see, they were missing some of important player, Bevan and McGrath, but that shouldn't be an excuse as they are the world champs and they should be doing well without some of their high profile players.

Gret performance by West Indies, Hinds just stole the limelight after he was shown the door at the start of oneday series.
Australia were outplayed with thier full strength side playing. Umair, Mcgrath played in 5-6 of the 7 matches and they were rotating thier fast bowlers and that was thier own choice. Westindies on the other hand were more handicapped because of Lawsons and Chander paul's injuries. Fact is, they were out played throughly by westindies in latter part of series.

I just Wonder why West indies didnt show the same intensity in earlier matches like tests and early part of onedays series, Had they done that, they could have won one day series.

Ponting: one-day series was too long](http://uk.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2003/JUN/190918_AUSINWI_03JUN2003.html)

It was a fairly predictable excuse for Australia’s capitulation in the final three matches of their Caribbean tour, but it was no less valid for that: Ricky Ponting has argued that their recent seven-match one-day series against West Indies lacked appeal for the participants.

“I think seven games against the one side is a few too many in these one-day tournaments,” said Ponting, whose side had wrapped up the series by taking an unassailable 4-0 lead with three to play. “It tends to drag on a bit, and get a bit monotonous. We had that also in my first series as captain in South Africa. We got off to a very good start in that tournament and probably petered away towards the end. I think five games would be better than seven.”

Understandably, Brian Lara was keen not to detract from his side’s achievement in inflicting three consecutive defeats on Australia – after all, the last time that happened, in the VB Series in 2001-02, the upshot was Steve Waugh’s sacking as one-day captain. “Right now [my favoured length is] seven games,” joked Lara. But he agreed that the format lacked bite, and said it was a pity that Sri Lanka – who arrived in the Caribbean on Monday – had not been included in the series. “I like having a third team and a final,” said Lara. “Maybe Sri Lanka should have been here earlier. It would’ve made things a lot more exciting.”

It was a visibly shattered Australian team who slumped to a nine-wicket defeat in Grenada on Sunday, and mentally, half the side were already on their flights home. At a time when the international fixture list is crying out for less, the lessons are there to be heeded.

I agree with ponting, after playing 4 test, 7 one dayers is just too much, it should one or another.
