I have another question, does S/K look formal on it’s own or should it be complimented with a ‘patka’ (shawl) or anything else to make it look a bit formal?

I think it depends on the S/K, if its a nicely tailored kurta shalwar it would look nice on its own too. Plus you said its a small event so the groom can easily pull a simple S/K look.
