I feel that brides are dressing up way too much on mehndi these days. Makeup needs to be more subtle no?
Stuff along these lines :
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
Nope. Its gotta be what you love on yourself, no rules lol. Go barefaced if you can pull it off and if you like the look; go full on if you don't. Dupatta on head if you like it, no dupatta if you don't. Etc, etc.
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
There is some credence to traditions no?
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
I like the more natural look for mehndis.
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
I love the subtle, polished look for the mehndi. I find brides tend to do something similar to their everyday makeup for the mehndi, for some that's a light look with some gloss and mascara, for others, it's much heavier.
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
Personally if i went bare-faced i would not feel at all confident or happy. Id wear foundation a bit of blush eyeliner and mascara. but that is just me!
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis

sure, but some traditions can be sacrificed for your own happiness, i feel, and have been, like the ghoonghat, for example. so if barefaced isn't working for you, throw some makeup on. don't stress about it because it isn't strictly traditional.
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
Girls girls, Im not recommending ANYONE to go barefaced! I have no idea how people in older generations managed it and still looked gorgeous but I and my friends definitely think we cant! A great glowy foundation and the slightest hint of blush, kohl rimmed eyes and gloss is a perfect look IMO. it should be subtle extreme so that u can pull it off as natural beauty and wow the people in the shadi dress the following day!
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
^ it was an example of less makeup, i suppose lol
but you're right, barefaced is a bit extreme :p
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
^agreed! Alhough barefaced works for a lucky few, I would want to look back at the pics and not be focusing on blemishes!
Hence maybe some tinted moisturiser, blush, mascara and liptint. But i do agree with somegroovychick as well because everyone is different and if a girl wants full coverage and the whole works, then so be it, whatever makes her day!
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
I think if you want to go less dramatic with makeup on your mehndi, do full coverage on the face (because there will obviously be pics taken) but tone down the eyes and lips with something natural. I don't think I could just walk into my mehndi with tinted moisturizer on... I would need the whole shebang minus all the heavy contouring and eye makeup.
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
^ I agree.
Mehndi, Shaadi and Walima are your days to shine anyway -- might as well do it in glam! BUT, I do like the subtle "natural" look for the mehndi, that way on the Shaadi you get that wow effect!
I would probably have full-coverage for the face, a little eyeliner, subtle blush and a lip-tint
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
I went all out for my mehendi because I had hired my favourite photographers and was doing a shoot and I wanted to look glam for it and because barefaced just wouldn't have worked with the jora I had. I also had my hair down and no dupatta on my head because it was a comparatively laidback occasion and pretty small. It was a very different look from my wedding day despite the full face of makeup I had on both days. My mehendi jora was more colourful whereas my shaadi one was more subtle so I guess the looks were reversed from what is traditional- for eg: I did the red lip on mehendi and the pinky-brown one for shaadi.
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
^^^^ Do show us pics! Or PM me some Id love to see!
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
Following should do very well, in my opinion:
-
Lots of skin primer to matte-fy the EERIE shine off face
-
Concealer coverage, wherever necessary
-
Light kajal (won’t go all coal for the yes on mehndi)
and
- A subtle lip stain, as I am not not very keen on gloss any more.
Also as an afterthought, the idea of floral jewelry (all hanging and dangling) has become kinda repulsive for me (no offence meant, just a personal idea)

The thing is you looked festive but I don't think you looked super "done up". A very pretty mehndi bride :D
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
I think it depends on the venue, I've seen pictures here of brides having huge elaborate mehndis, heavy joras and then just go completely bare faced....just looks really bad to me. At the least, a little bit of makeup like everyone here has mentioned should be used..
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
SGC you looked AMAZING on both day, mA'.
I agree with others, do what makes you feel most beautiful. I personally like the natural look, and I would like really natural make-up for mehndi and shaadi day because I just feel uncomfortable with colored/darker make-up.
Re: Appropriate amount of makeup on mehndis
I think it depends. If you have some blemishes/dark circles on your skin....then maybe apply a dab of foundation/concealer just to those areas...and not the the whole face...so it looks more natural and is more in keeping with the tradition. If your skin is clear and in good condition....throw on some lip gloss and light mascara (not the heavy variety that will clump on you)...and you should be good to go. It'll give you that something "extra" for pictures...and won't look overdone.
