I’m a noob at all of this so excuse the silly questions, pweez.
How do you go about applying for jobs in another country where you know no one? Just post/email the company your CV and hope they call you back? I don’t know why but I’ve a feeling you’d never get a call back this way…
From my experience, I've applied online and/ or emailed my resume and cover letter to companies. I give them a few weeks to get back to me (which is the hardest part!!). I always follow up with either another email or call the company, if I haven't been contacted, and request to speak with the hiring manager/ human resources/ or recruiter. Once I speak with someone, I only ask if they've had a chance to look at my resume yet. If so, great! And ask if they have any questions or when I can expect to hear from them.
If not, I let them know about how long ago I submitted my information and that I'm looking forward to hearing back from them.
So my husband is in finance and works closely with the HR dept sometimes and he always tells me that they get annoyed when they get people calling them with followups on applications or interviews! Following up doesn't always show initiative or passion but these days you should be able to get an email from a company if whether or not they've received your application and are looking into it, or have moved on to other candidates! I would suggest applying through the company site and just keeping track of each applications, sometimes it can take months for them to respond which has also happened with my husband. They sometimes keep resumes on file for a while or until something comes along for the part they feel you might be a good fit.
